About the Role

Culmen International is seeking an Animal Research Technician to support a Naval Medical Research program in Portsmouth, VA.

This position will provide guidance, training, and technical assistance to Principal Investigators (PIs), research personnel, and veterinary staff with the goal to enhance their ability to effectively execute research protocols, including those that comply with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).



What You'll Do in Your New Role

In this role, you will perform minor surgical procedures, assist with major surgeries, ensure and researchers have the support they need during critical operations. In addition, you will:

    Handle the collection, analysis, preservation, and disposal of biological specimens, including euthanasia and necropsy, all while prioritizing ethical considerations.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organization by disinfecting and sterilizing surgical instruments, as well as managing inventory levels efficiently.
  • Ability to follow the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and standard operating procedures in the vivarium.
  • Ensure the safe receipt, restraint, and handling of animals, coupled with rigorous maintenance of clean and sanitary environments for their care.
  • Provide comprehensive support through feeding, watering, and transporting animals, while conducting thorough physical examinations and diagnostic procedures, ensuring accurate and detailed data recording in medical records. -
  • Administer anesthesia and monitoring its effects, operating physiological equipment effectively, and providing attentive post-operative care, which includes assessing pain and administering necessary medications.


Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of direct relevant experience
  • Experience working with animals in a laboratory or clinical setting
  • Experience with both small and large lab animals
  • Knowledge of routine veterinary technical and husbandry techniques
  • Knowledge of appropriate and effective handling of animals
  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures of a lab environment
  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in a related field
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance
