Job Summary:

This Student Affairs Program Specialist within the Associated Students of Madison (ASM) advises numerous student leaders. This position develops the leadership skills of students through individual advising and training. This includes conflict resolution, delegation, accountability, time management, strategic short-term and long-term planning, assertive communication, proactive advising, effective recruitment and retention, facilitation methods, mentoring student leaders, accessing university and department resources, and maintaining a healthy work/life balance.


Responsibilities:
Provides subject matter expertise in the development and execution of programs within the scope of student learning and development. Organizes the facilitation and development of curriculum design for on-going and new educational initiatives. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

  • 20% Creates and maintains schedules, logistics, and resources for one or multiple student affairs programs, activities, and/or services
  • 30% Organizes student-focused programming and resources to promote new and ongoing educational initiatives
  • 20% Serves as a subject matter expert regarding student affairs to internal and external stakeholders
  • 5% Generates and analyzes reports of curricular and unit outcomes
  • 5% Writes, edits, and publishes content for various communication projects and marketing platforms to align with strategic initiatives and established communication campaigns
  • 20% Fosters student development and advises student leaders, providing historical and institutional knowledge and logistical support


Tasks:

  • Support student needs on campaigns and committees, including attending weekly and evening meetings.
  • Develop, evaluate, and deliver resource materials on applied community organizing, government relations, university governance, and compliance with relevant policies and procedures at the federal, state, and university levels.
  • May assist with the planning and coordination of student leadership retreats such as the Coordinating Council Retreat, Student Council Retreat, and the Intern Retreat.
  • Develop cross campus relationships with other staff and students to provide information on and educate on behalf of student governance.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Student Development Theory, College Student Personnel, Education, or a related field.
- Experience advising and/or mentoring students (preferred in a higher education setting)
- Training skills and the ability to explain complex policies and concepts to varied audiences
- Organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects as one time
- Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects at one time
- Possess self-direction and initiative
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and ability to collaborate effectively with individuals and units outside the team

Preferred:
- Knowledge and/or experience working with shared governance bodies in a higher education institution.
- Demonstrated breadth of experience with student, grassroots, or campaign organizing
- Demonstrated experience engaging in civic activities, like elections, issue campaigns, or citizen organizations
- Successful experience advising and/or mentoring students
- Ability to establish and build working relationships with other people
- Ability to work effectively within a divergent community in a sensitive and caring manner
- A commitment to proactive advising and engagement with all communities.
- Ability to assimilate new and unfamiliar information and to work effectively when required in situations with limited structure and a degree of uncertainty
- Knowledge of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with an emphasis on shared governance and higher education policy
- Excellent written communication skills


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely at an offsite, non-campus work location upon supervisor and department/Student Affairs division approval.

Salary:

Minimum $49,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The starting salary range for this position is expected to be between $49,000 and $54,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Candidates with vast relevant experience may qualify for the higher end of this range.

The Associated Students of Madison (ASM) serves as the official student shared governance body at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, representing a population of over 50,000 students. ASM works to directly involve and empower all students in making their own lives better by participating in strategic campaigns. Through this work students learn to be effective, engaged citizens who can coordinate and advocate for themselves. Wisconsin statute empowers ASM to review and allocate over $70 million of segregated fee dollars each year and advise the Chancellor regarding decisions and policies concerning student life, services, and interests. This position will advise, assist, and empower students in making their voices heard within the University of Wisconsin-Madison through policy development, understanding of student-segregated fees, and leadership development.

ASM is part of Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, led by the vice chancellor for student affairs.
