At Ports America, the Operations Manager is a key position as it provides leadership and direction to the Assistant Operations Managers as well as the union labor force to ensure a safe, efficient and productive terminal operation. The Operations Manager will ensure that all stevedoring and terminal activities are performed in a safe and efficient manner.

Essential Duties:



  • Responsible for coordinating all safety, security, terminal, stevedoring and ancillary services for all ship calls.
  • Develop operational plans for the ships safety, security, traffic and parking activity.
  • Maintains good working relationship with labor and union officials to ensure that all labor policies and contracts are adhered to.
  • Attends regular meetings with labor, giving them current company information, emphasizing good safety practices for the terminal.
  • Oversees hiring of union labor workforce.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all permit requirements as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA facility and stevedoring standards.
  • Approve all operational reports.
  • Ensure payroll procedures are followed to report accurate data.
  • Provide customer support and coordination for all ships.
  • Ensure that staff is adequately educated and trained in OSHA, OHS&E policies and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Maintain and implement security and emergency response plans.
  • Functions as Alternate Facility Security Officer when needed.
  • Report to General Manager on conditions of facility and operational readiness.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Minimum Requirements:



  • BA/BS degree in any discipline OR an equivalent combination of Education and Experience
  • A valid Driver's License in good standing is required.
  • Requires the ability to obtain a TWIC Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Position requires the ability to secure a Pier Superintendent License issued by NY/NJ Waterfront Commission.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • 10+ years of previous supervisory experience, experience with union labor a plus.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification a plus.
  • Facility Security Officer Certification a plus.
  • Requires demonstrated leadership skills.
  • High level of planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional time management, due to fast-moving, demanding work environment.
  • Must be computer literate; proficient with Microsoft Office - Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations and related industry governmental regulations.
  • Requires the availability to work varied hours and shifts including days, nights and holidays as needed.'
  • Ability to travel between local sites as well as out of state as needed.



Working Conditions:



  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, occasional sitting.
  • The ability to climb up and down stairs and equipment multiple times within a shift.
  • Requires physical ability to work on a ship and in a yard.
  • The ability to use a computer/keyboard.
  • The ability to work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
  • The ability to work in an environment with moving objects and machinery.
  • The environment may be hazardous to persons unable to see or hear fast moving heavy equipment.
