Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Central University ( NCCU) invites distinguished applicants for the role of Director, Julius L. Chambers Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute ( JLC- BBRI). This position reports directly to the Associate Provost and Dean, Research and Sponsored Programs and holds a tenured professorship. The Director will spearhead the institute's strategic initiatives, leading its growth in innovative biomedical and biobehavioral sciences research. Established in 1999, the JLC- BBRI facilities comprise 40,000 sq. ft. and is equipped to provide a rich environment for cutting-edge research dedicated to the advancement of fundamental knowledge of human diseases, with a special focus on health disparities.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Director will oversee NCCU's JLC- BBRI research facilities in Durham and Kannapolis, NC (North Carolina Research Campus- NCRC). The successful candidate will exhibit visionary leadership, chart strategic directions that align with NCCU's long-term goals to propel the institute to the forefront of biomedical and biobehavioral sciences research. The Director will lead and expand the institute's research portfolio, to enhance its national stature while ensuring that research activities remain cutting-edge; manage the institute's budget and provide overall administrative leadership; supervise and mentor faculty to secure external research funding; and forge robust collaborations and partnerships with academic units within NCCU, government agencies, industry leaders, and other academic institutions globally, particularly those in the Research Triangle Park. The Director will also work closely with NCCU's Institutional Advancement to ensure the institute's continued growth and impact in the scientific community.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Scientific Development and Management
* Maintains status as a recognized leader in a field of research through an active portfolio of sponsored research grants and contracts; consistent publishing in peer reviewed journals; participation on grant review panels; presentations at national and international meetings and other scientific venues.
* Develops in collaboration with relevant internal and external stakeholders a comprehensive strategic plan for the Institute's sustained growth and research development.
* Advises the Associate Provost and Dean, Research and Sponsored Programs on the planning, direction, and implementation of NCCU's research enterprise and performs other tasks as required by the Associate Provost.
* Provides overall leadership to individuals and teams of investigators in developing a strategic approach for increasing the innovation and competitiveness of research conducted in the JLC- BBRI.
* Serves as a reviewer for the development and submission of research grant applications from the Institute.
* Participates in both internal and external advisory committees for JLC- BBRI research programs; assuring appropriate and timely recommendations from these committees are implemented.
* Leads and/or facilitates the development of responses to requests for applications or proposals that require multi-disciplinary or multi-institution collaboration.
* Develops and utilizes a consistent mechanism for evaluating productivity of researchers and implements strategies to address under performance.
* Works collaboratively with academic units to assure appropriate release time from teaching assignments is properly negotiated to facilitate participation in research projects and appropriate reimbursement to academic departments for faculty release is accomplished.
* Works collaboratively with the Director of NCCU's Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise ( BRITE) and Deans of academic units to form synergies and foster sustainable research collaborations.
* Continuously explores opportunities to develop mutually beneficial partnerships and collaborative relationships with scientists and clinicians external to NCCU.
* Represents the scientific interests of the JLC- BBRI to internal and external stakeholders and organizations.
* Serves on University committees to develop policies and procedures to address issues that impact research conducted by faculty.
* Develops and administers a process for undergraduate and graduate student research experiences in the JLC- BBRI; assures consistent evaluation of students' progress and effectiveness of mentorship.
Planning Analysis and Organizational Management
* Determines operational, research, business, and administrative objectives to address goals established in strategic plans developed by the University and the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs.
* Identifies and develops appropriate resources to support the research efforts of scientists; negotiates space allocation, capital equipment and personnel support.
* Works collaboratively with North Carolina Research Campus ( NCRC) internal and external partners/stakeholders as the primary liaison of NCCU.
* Ensures the facility, staffing and administrative structures of the Institute are in accordance with state and federal regulations and relevant accrediting agencies.
Financial Management
* Works collaboratively with the JLC- BBRI researchers on research/grant proposals and research/grant submissions.
* Works collaboratively with Institutional Advancement in the coordination and implementation of strategies relevant to major gifts and donor engagement to support growth of JLC- BBRI.
* Works collaboratively with appropriate units within the University on budget, bid specifications for capital equipment; equipment maintenance; facility planning; IT services; materials and supplies; needed to support and advance research, teaching, and service.
Personnel Management
* Demonstrates management skills that include collegiality and respect along with excellence in problem solving and the ability to establish effective partnerships in an academic environment.
* Identifies position requirements and initiates recruitment of research scientists and technical support personnel who will advance the mission of the JLC- BBRI.
* Exhibits commitment to diversity evidenced by specific initiatives and/or programs focused on the recruitment, development and retention of diverse faculty, staff, and students, and the ability to communicate effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
Minimum Education/Experience
The Director will have a doctorate degree (Ph.D.) or equivalent doctoral degree in the biomedical sciences; or (M.D.) degree with relevant research experience from an accredited institution. The Director will have a distinguished record of leadership, research, grantsmanship, publications, and other scholarly activities. Sustained contribution to the sciences will be evidenced by productivity in funded research and publications. Continuous experience as a principal investigator on externally funded biomedically related research projects is also required. A record of administration in higher education is highly preferred.
