POSITION SUMMARY:

Key member of the Accounting and Finance team who is integral in the preparation of the monthly financial statements under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Statutory Accounting Principles (STAT). Provides back-up for Assistant Controller.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Key Functions/Responsibilities:


  • Prepares assigned journal entries, analyzes and reconciles interfaces with general ledger accounts. This includes primarily investment related accounting for both STAT and GAAP, intercompany entries and billings, Incurred but Unreported Claim reserves and related liabilities. Additionally, individual will have some ownership of line of business receivable and related revenue journal entries as well. As it relates to Investment accounting, individual will work with Custodian and outsourced Investment Accounting firm.
  • Performs accounting analyses, administers the Health Plan's general accounting, and financial reports in -Infor General Ledger.
  • Maintains and processes entries in accordance with GAAP and STAT as noted previously.
  • Prepares and reviews income and balance sheet statements, consolidated statements, and general accounting reports in various formats as needed by the Health Plan and the Boston Medical Center Health System.
  • Oversees the analysis and reconciliation of General Ledger reports. Closes ledgers and generates monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for assigned accounts.
  • Contributes to quarterly and annual reporting to Division of Insurance, which are prepared under Statutory Accounting Principles.
  • Assist in preparing workpapers for annual tax filings, Form 990 and Mass Form PC.
  • Prepares weekly analyses of payments to major medical providers / facilities and reconciles to relevant claims system operating reports.
  • Responsible for preparation and review of certain Model Audit Rule controls.
  • Supports annual budget preparation as needed.
  • Interacts with external independent auditors as well as Internal Audit and assists them with interim and year-end audits, as appropriate.
  • Partners with HR to produce monthly payroll reports as needed.

Supervision Exercised:

  • May provide technical supervision to less experienced staff as needed.

Supervision Received:

  • Reports to Assistant Controller.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required. CPA designation preferred.

Preferred/Desirable:

Experience:


  • Experience working for accident and health or property and casualty insurance company preferred.
  • Two to five years' progressive experience within an Accounting Department or CPA firm.

Preferred/Desirable:


  • Knowledge of basic financial and accounting practices and procedures.
  • Exposure to managed care insurance.

Certification or Conditions of Employment:

Competencies, Skills, and Attributes:


  • Proficiency with Excel, and Microsoft Office Systems required, experience using a cloud-based accounting system such as Infor or PeopleSoft preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, work accurately, meet deadlines and provide effective management reporting is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required to develop and maintain effective working relationships across all levels within the organization is of the essence of this position. Written and oral communications must meet the highest professional standards of common courtesy, English vocabulary and grammar, and statements that are based in facts at all times and to all persons of any level.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of team. Team player orientation required.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and manage modest projects successfully.
  • Detail-oriented, excellent proof reading and editing skills.
  • Commitment to documenting desk procedures; and training other assignees as back-up.
