DESCRIPTION

The Associate Vice Chancellor for Leadership, Strategy and Engagement (AVC-LSE) is responsible for developing campaign and transformational gifts strategy, the development of personalized engagement, stewardship and communication strategies, overall results of a collaborative fundraising effort for prospective donors whose capacity to give to the University is a minimum of $1 million, and recruiting, managing and soliciting the global campaign cabinet and lead volunteers to ensure the philanthropic results from the highest level community, national and international leaders. The AVC-LSE will lead and support development of targeted and coordinated plans for prospects that aligns that prospect's deepest interests, passions and philanthropic objectives with the University's current or future initiatives, projects and programs. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor Advancement (VCA), the AVC-LSE is expected to work closely with the Chancellor, Vice Chancellors, Deans, Faculty, the Assistant and Associate Vice Chancellors and frontline fundraisers for Advancement.

The AVC-LSE will create the next generation of transformational gift philanthropists and campaign leaders resulting in exponentially increased national and international fundraising results.

The AVC-LSE, in conjunction with the AVC-AOC, AVC-HS, AVC-UD and AVC-AAGPD, will assist in developing fundraising strategies and marshal internal support for fundraising proposals, bringing the best opportunity for success to each donor solicitation. The AVC-LSE will also assist with specific principal gift fundraising strategies and stewardship activities for the Chancellor, Volunteer Leadership, and Campaign Leadership (Honorary Chairs, International Chairs, Vice Chairs, etc.) positioning them with the highest-level leaders and prospects where they reside. In consultation, the AVC-LSE will be responsible for developing on a monthly basis, strategy and stewardship reports for the Chancellor on key prospects and for participating with the Chancellor, VC-A, and Assistant and Associate Vice Chancellors in the development of specific strategies for these "Critical Few". The AVC-LSE will also serve on the Advancement Senior Leadership and Management Team, which develops and drives key campus-wide fundraising strategies and campaigns.

In direct support of the Chancellor's special initiatives, the AVC-LSE will lead vision planning and strategic project fundraising for the University's newest plans requiring approx. $5M-$10M+ in philanthropic funding.

Critical to the success of the AVC-LSE will be the ability to continue the Leadership, Strategy and Engagement unit as a highly-respected, valuable partner to the Advancement team in the strategic engagement and personalized stewardship of donors. Both a leader and a facilitator, the AVC-LSE is expected to draw upon all assets of the University to develop fundraising strategies and highly customized stewardship plans that engage top tier donors and prospects in ways that respond creatively to their personalized interests and needs.

The AVC-LSE is a hands-on and deeply involved strategic partner, and leads fundraising and stewardship efforts to meet the campaign objectives. This is an entrepreneurial, results-oriented environment that requires innovative thinking, initiative, focused action and collaborative communication. QUALIFICATIONS
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations, including principles, concepts, techniques and procedures.

  • Expert knowledge of design and implementation of donor identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies and techniques.

  • Expert skills to conceive, design, implement and evaluate effective fundraising programs.

  • Expert knowledge of the campus and / or medical center, its achievements, vision, mission, goals, objectives and issues of concern both on campus and / or medical center as well as in higher education and the medical sciences.

  • Expert knowledge of leadership and management principles, concepts, techniques, etc.

  • Expert leadership / management skills, including skills to select, train, mentor, motivate and evaluate all levels of staff.

  • Expert written, oral and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.

  • Expert skills to meet predetermined goals and objectives, including meeting fundraising goals and objectives.

  • Expert level political acumen.

  • Expert strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical and persuasion / negotiation skills.

  • Expert marketing skills.

  • Working knowledge of foundations and non-profit, public benefit corporations.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills that demonstrate correct grammar usage, syntax, and format, with the ability to make oral presentations and/or interpret various related programs to constituents.

  • Demonstrated knowledge, accountability, and comprehension skills to formulate budgetary planning and prioritization of projects, programs and activities, using sound judgment while meeting organizational goals. Ability to effectively delegate work to others in order to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Demonstrated personnel management skills to provide guidance to maintain a strong team of players. Dispense appropriate disciplinary action when necessary. Ability to hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff.

  • Strong organizational skills, with management and leadership ability, to motivate staff and to act as role model for all Advancement operations.

  • Proven ability in developing an effective volunteer structure to maximize the strengths of volunteers, thereby creating a sound, strong volunteer base for fundraising purposes.

  • Ability to work independently, exercising initiative to provide supervisors and other UC San Diego leadership with information to keep them adequately informed. Display a willingness to seek counsel when appropriate.

  • Ability to inspire confidence by displaying a strong sense of ethical conduct that will effectively motivate and persuade diverse groups.

  • Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to represent UC San Diego favorably to both campus and community constituents.

  • Proven success as development officer in a highly sophisticated, donor-centered fundraising environment as a direct-line fundraiser.

  • Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • Progressive experience in fundraising roles leading to opportunities to lead and manage individuals working in principal gift and transformative gift programs.

  • Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including: gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition, and administration.

  • Demonstrated success at raising funds by developing and implementing strategic solicitation fund raising plans that incorporate a concise definition of goals, targeted audiences, and strategies in-line with institution and academic goals in higher education or other complex organization, and closing gifts $1 million+ from individuals, corporations, and foundations, local, national and global.

Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $194,800 - $454,400 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $93.30 - $217.62

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
