Postdoctoral Scholar

The Engineering Division at Berkeley Lab is hiring a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Accelerator Systems/Magnetics Measurements Group. The role involves research on magnetic measurements and tuning of electromagnets and permanent magnet systems. The postdoc will support experiments at the Magnetics Department for the ALS and ALS-U programs and gain exposure to various Accelerator Technology and Physics fields within the ATAP Division and the Berkeley Center for Magnet Technology.

What You Will Do:

• Conduct research and develop instruments for magnetic measurements and tuning of electromagnets and permanent magnet systems.
• Utilize a range of instrumentation, hardware design, and analytical skills to create measurement methods for accelerator magnets and undulators.
• Contribute to the design, installation, and commissioning of custom electronics, signal processing, motion control, and data systems.
• Document and present findings through reports, presentations, meetings, conferences, and peer-reviewed publications.
• Collaborate with scientists, engineers, postdocs, technicians, and students.

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

• May mentor PhD or undergraduate students.

What is Required:

• Recent Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, or Accelerator Physics (within the last two years).
• Knowledge of instrumentation, motion control, magnetic systems, and light sources preferred.
• Experience with data acquisition using Python, LabView, Matlab, or similar software preferred.
• Strong publication record with demonstrated proficiency in written and oral presentation of scientific results.

Notes:

• This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
• The monthly salary range for this position is $5,562 - $9,136 and is expected to start at $7,716 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.
• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
• Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
