Radio Frequency Systems Engineer - C&S

Job Summary
Design, development, and maintenance of communication systems within yard, tunnel, and wayside environments. This includes ensuring the reliability and performance of radio frequency (RF) systems used for train control, safety, and operational efficiency. Work closely with other departments to integrate these systems seamlessly into the broader network infrastructure, addressing any issues that arise and implementing improvements as needed.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities



  • Oversee safety within system operations.
  • Lead and mentor cross-functional teams.
  • Provide focused support of Automatic Equipment Identification (AEI), Defect Detector (DD), and Crossing systems including managing the integration, data verification, and system health for each system.
  • Provide expertise for technology design and vendor management.
  • Perform Tier 3 level troubleshooting for the operational performance of RF systems (voice, data, software-defined, etc.), including but not limited to Dispatcher, Positive Train Control (PTC), Mobile, Portables, Distributed Power (DP), Portable Locomotive Control Technology (PLCT), and End-of-Train/Head-of-Train Device (EOT/HTD) radio systems.
  • Provide training/instructional documentation and updated drawings where needed
  • Troubleshoot system interdependencies.
  • Communicate strategy and progress with Senior Leadership.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned by the manager


Minimum Qualifications



  • Associate's degree/2-year Degree
  • 5 or more years of experience in RF and C&S systems


Equivalent Minimum Qualifications



  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 10 or more years of experience in RF & C&S systems


Preferred Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree
  • 7 or more years of experience in RF & C&S systems


Knowledge and Skills



  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance matters
  • Experience in the railroading communications and signaling technologies
  • Knowledge of Network Management systems and industry's best practices and leading trends
  • Strong Leadership skills
  • Strong problems solving skills
  • Strong analytical expertise
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels in the organization
