Position Summary
JMT is seeking an experienced and strategic director of communications to lead our communications efforts and mentor our team of communicators.

The ideal candidate will have exceptional communication skills, particularly in writing, collaborating, and marketing, with a working understanding of the civil engineering industry or similar industries.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional trustworthiness while working cooperatively and collaboratively with senior executives, STEM subject-matter experts, and other marketing and support staff to best position JMT's brand.

This role will require a strong grasp of the English language and demonstrated proficiency as a senior writer and editor. The ideal candidate will be detail-focused while also maintaining a comprehensive plan for implementing communications strategies. This person will be able to train a team of junior and mid-level writers and communicators on better writing and speaking strategies, along with marketing, technical, persuasive, and other versatile forms of communication.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of the Plain English Act and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. This role will involve developing and implementing strategies to enhance the writing and accessibility of our content. The ideal candidate should be skilled in creating clear, concise, and accessible writing while overseeing all internal and external communications. The ideal candidate will excel at collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure our content meets the highest standards of quality and accessibility.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Develop and implement a strategic communications plan that aligns with the company's operational and strategic goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate and produce all internal and external communications, including press releases, website content, proposals, presentation materials, information brochures, internal and external correspondence, reports, speeches, policies, procedures, solicitation, and any other persuasive or technical communications required.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to craft key messages and ensure consistent communication across all channels.
  • Demonstrate integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness with key information and audiences.
  • Lead and mentor a team of young communications professionals, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure high-quality writing and output.
  • Develop and maintain trusting relationships with SMEs and project teams to highlight significant milestones and achievements in our projects.
  • Monitor industry trends, language trends, and competitor activities to inform communication strategies.
  • Ensure all communications are aligned with the company brand and values.
  • Manage crisis communications and develop contingency plans to address potential issues.
  • Work closely with our content manager and senior writers to ensure excellent writing.
  • Build strategies for online and social communications channels, balancing business objectives against risk.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in communications, English composition, public relations, or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of corporate communications and marketing experience at a director level
  • Exceptional trustworthiness, cooperation, and collaboration skills to work alongside senior leadership and other SMEs across the firm
  • Exceptional writing skills with a demonstrated proficiency in technical communications
  • Public involvement/public relations experience, including coordinating project activities and communications for existing and potential clients
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Highly adept in grammar, syntax, and mechanics in writing and speech
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a proven record of creating, implementing, and overseeing successful strategic marketing campaigns
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate complex information, concepts, and practices
  • Diversity of thought, with the ability to be an innovative thinker, supporting JMT's vision
  • Proven website content management and development and other digital marketing channels
  • Ability to travel to JMT's headquarters in Hunt Valley, MD, as needed
