UCF Health - Student Health Services (SHS):

UCF Health - Student Health Services (SHS) provides various primary and specialty care services to help keep students, faculty and staff at their optimum health. The Health Center is located on the Main Campus. Our services are designed with students, faculty and staff needs in mind. The Opportunity:

The Student Health Services (SHS) Medical Secretary II position provides non-clinical patient support at UCF Student Health Services-Main Campus, SHS DT Campus, and SHS College of Medicine. The Medical Secretary II will serve as a team lead for the department. Responsible for reviewing patients accounts, performing database maintenance functions, and ensuring accuracy of all data recorded. Works under the supervision of the Student Health Coordinator.

This is a time-limited funded position. Employment is subject to the availability of funding and may cease at the time funding for this employment is depleted.

Responsibilities:


  • Greets patients and acts as the primary scheduler for UCF Student Health Services, determining appointment types and time lengths. Attends incoming calls, disseminates information, and directs visitors to the appropriate department(s).

  • Serves as a back up to supervisor for patient support services, providing expertise in healthcare laws, rules, regulations, and interpreting SHS policies and procedures. Responsible for assisting with the creation and modification of provider schedules in the EHR system. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Assists in coordinating administrative tasks, including supervising OPS, student employees, and USPS positions. Assists with employee schedules, provides coverage for the main clinic and satellite clinics, and helps with HR functions (hiring, training, supervising, evaluating, and assisting with disciplinary actions for appointment staff).

  • Responsible for scheduling appointments with the appropriate providers for non-emergency patients and referring them to Nurse Facilitator for triage if needed.

  • Verifies insurance eligibility through PeopleSoft, reconciles scheduling conflicts, and enters or updates patient insurance information in the EHR system. Ensures data accuracy.

  • Promotes respectful, proactive relationships with students, staff, clinical staff, and administrators. Assists with day-to-day functions and the workflow of the Front Office.

  • Completes all steps listed on the opening/closing appointment checklist, ensures timely completion of SHS and University training, and assists with training USPS, OPS, and Student Clerks. Stocks and controls forms and supplies.

  • Timely completion of all university, AHSC, and SHS trainings.


Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Medical terminology knowledge and understanding of CPT and ICD-10 codes. Proficient with medical terminology.

  • Working knowledge of health insurance, pre-authorizations, and medical specialties.

  • At least 6 months of scheduling experience in a health care setting.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Electronic Medical Records experience.

  • Excellent professional communication skills, at all levels within the organization and with patients.
