Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As an innovation leader, we seek ambitious, forward-thinking, open-minded, and well-rounded individuals to join our global team. Located in our Rochester Hills office, as a Senior Development Engineer, you will provide product development engineering services to develop electric water pumps (EWP), overseeing the design, development, testing, and customer support.

You will collaborate with suppliers and the development team to bring the EWP from concept to production. This role involves managing product development projects related to EWPs, following the Gates product development process. Your contributions are vital to Gates as you leverage your knowledge to reduce emissions across various applications and industries!

You will report to the Product Engineering Manager - Electric Water Pumps.




  • Independently applies extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields.
  • Uses advanced techniques in the modification or extension of theories and practices of sciences and disciplines to complete assignments.
  • Works on a major project or several projects of moderate scope with complex features.
  • Reviews complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
  • Develops new techniques and/or improved processes, materials, or products.
  • Interprets internal/external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes or services
  • Impacts the achievement of customer, operational, project or service objectives; work is guided by department objectives
  • Communicates complex concepts; anticipates potential objections and influences others to adopt a different point of view

Keys to Success

  • Participate in weekly department meetings and report on product development and open issues, highlighting key development challenges and managing plans to resolve these issues.
  • Be responsible for hydraulic pump design and performance to meet customer requirements.
  • Work closely with the engineering team to define products that meet customer needs, establishing concept validation requirements with simulation and testing to verify product performance.
  • Collaborate with the Application and Development Engineer to define the bill of materials and component specifications.
  • Manage supplier open issues through weekly meetings.
  • Define and manage product design for the electric water pump, electric motors, and related components.
  • Work with teammates to maintain product DFMEA.
  • Define EWP design based on customer requirements.
  • Guide designers in creating component and assembly drawings with GD&T.
  • Create bills of materials (BOM) for EWPs.
  • Manage product validation.
  • Develop strong engineering relationships with strategic suppliers.
  • Requires in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in own areas and knowledge of other areas

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None
  • Leads others to solve complex problems; uses analytical thinking, tools and judgement to identify innovative solutions
  • Assists upper level management and staff as a technical specialist or advisor
  • May lead teams or projects with moderate resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity

Requirements and Preferred Skills

  • 8-10 years of experience
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in electric motor design and the automotive industry, including product design, development, testing, and industrialization
  • A working understanding of electric motor and pump characteristics, development processes, and automotive industry practices
  • A strong background in defining pump architecture and fluid pumps
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% (for supplier visits, OEM engineers, prospects, or working with customer personnel)
  • Excited to collaborate in the office with a great team
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
