Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • As an innovation leader, we look for ambitious, forward-thinking, open-minded, and well-rounded individuals to join our global team. Located in ourRochester Hills, MIoffice, your role as aProduct Development Engineerwill involve these items below:



  • Hydraulic hose fitting, Universal Quick Disconnect (UQD & UDQB), and hydraulic quick-disconnect-coupling design experience is highly sought after
  • You'll be working with multiple, cross-functional departments within the global organization at Gates
  • This is an exciting opportunity for you because you will be responsible for the design, development and performance testing of connectors used in hydraulic and fluid transfer applications
  • Your objective/goals will be to create and analyze new or improved designs which you will control through the develop and revision of global standards
  • Your fit in the organization will be part of a team of engineers responsible for fluid power connector development
  • You will be supporting other global and regional departments: Hose Development, Materials Development, Applications Engineering, Global Product Line Management, Operations, Procurement, etc.
  • This position is vital to Gates because you will be at the helm of a large and complex product line helping to guide its continued success
  • Applies broad knowledge of principles and practices in a specific practice area.
  • Works on multiple projects of moderate size or portions of major projects.
  • Designs a complete project, system, component, or process.
  • Prepares complete project documents.
  • Designs and conducts experiments, and analyzes and interprets data.
  • Independently evaluates, selects, and adapts standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Formulates and solves problems.
  • Impacts a range of customer, operational, project or service activities within own team and other related teams; works within broad guidelines and policies
  • Explains complex, difficult and/or sensitive information; works to build consensus

Keys to Success

  • Creating and analyzing new designs for improved manufacturability and cost optimization
  • Organizing, planning and executing projects with a global team to fully implement optimization proposals
  • Analysis using mathematical and empirical data, creation of execution schedules, and insuring there are appropriate business cases to support work
  • Monitoring the manufacturing of prototypes and coordinate validation testing, including forensic analysis of samples
  • Technical writing of global standards
  • Responding to the needs of the commercial organization in order to support high value customer needs for our products
  • Must be able to quickly learn to apply core engineering and six sigma skills such as problem solving, SPC data collection and analysis, FMEA, DOE, etc.
  • Acquires general knowledge of principles and practices of related fields, and ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Has knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; is aware of the competition and the factors that differentiate the company in the market

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None
  • Acts as a resource for other team members; may lead projects with limited risks and resource requirements

Requirements and Preferred Skills

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering required
  • 5-7+ years of engineering experience preferred
  • Experience using CAD software, PTC Creo preferred
  • Hydraulic hose fitting, Universal Quick Disconnect (UQD & UDQB), and hydraulic quick-disconnect-coupling design experience
  • Experience performing Finite Element Analysis using Marc a plus
  • A hands-on approach to product development
  • Travel: 10-20%
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship

  • Full-Time
  • Medical, Dental, Vision insurance and other voluntary benefit options: benefits beginonthe first day of the month immediately following your date of hire
  • Eligible for 3 weeks of paid vacation + 11 holidays (9 scheduled & 2 floating) + 8 sick days. All vacation days are accrued
