The Kasitsna Bay Lab (KBL) conducts research in Southcentral Alaska to support science serving coastal communities. This includes research performed in Kachemak Bay, regionally and statewide in Alaska. KBL research includes diving operations, remote shore-based research, and oceanographic sampling. Regularly assigned tasks include transportation of research teams, dive support, vessel upkeep and preventive maintenance, upkeep of field research equipment and tools, oceanographic sampling support and logistics facilitation. This is a part time temporary position (April- September). Work hours: 8:00 - 4:30 with some scheduling flexibility Up to 25% of time may involve travel Required experience:
- Ability to work independently, with, and in teams.
- Willingness to participate in fieldwork activities in all seasons, sometimes in remote locations that are challenging to navigate (kelp forests, sea grass beds, tide rips, etc.)
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and clear communications.
- Meets government requirements and training to drive government vehicles.
- 5+ years of experience driving and maintaining vessels up to 32' in length.
- Must be willing to complete NOAA small boat program operator requirements.
- Operational experience with dive equipment, tanks, and compressors.
Highly desirable experience:
- Experience with vessel operations in Alaska.
- Experience with vessel operations in challenging environments (wind, tide, etc.)
- Experience working in a remote lab location.
Duties:
- Vessel operations: Prioritize, maintain and operate KBL vessels in support of NOAA and partner research, in accordance with NOAA Small Boat Program procedures and requirements. Transport research teams to and from locations in Kachemak Bay and support equipment/personnel deployment. Assist with preventive maintenance and parts ordering for vessel support to maintain continuity of operations.
- Dive logistics: Prioritize, maintain and support KBL dive operations by filling tanks, operate the KBL dive compressor, sending equipment out for inspections and updates, and working with specific needs for NOAA and visiting researchers.
- Science support logistics: Prioritize and organize the shipment and deployment of research equipment between the KBL, KBL staff in the Homer-based offices and beyond. Assist with identifying local and regional equipment suppliers and contractors to support KBLs research mission.
- Collaboration with university partners: Work with university staff and researchers to coordinate science operations, shared schedules, and prioritization of vessel use. Assist with university and visiting research logistics and operations when possible. Serve as a point of contact for on-site collaboration and support.
- Communication with KBL staff: Submit monthly reports outlining vessel and dive operations, logistics, planning and needs.
