About the Department
The Office of Research Operations and Communications provides strategic leadership and support to the Office of Research and Innovation. The office consists of three units: Strategic Initiatives, Education and Training, and Marketing and Outreach. The Education and Training unit develops and implements education and training programs to serve the research community. Education and Training supports campus initiatives by linking educational activities directly to long term strategic goals and applies various techniques to improve the quality and relevance of education and training for the research and innovation community across NC State University. The unit is also responsible for developing and delivering Enterprise Research Administration system training for the entire campus. The unit works closely with all offices housed within Research and Innovation, including Sponsored Programs and Regulatory Compliance ( SPARCS), and partners with Office of Contracts and Grants and all of the College/Institute/Center Research Offices.

The Office of Contracts and Grants oversees post-award administration for NC State University. Contracts and Grants staff supports department and college Research Administrators, faculty, and staff by managing the cornerstones of Post-Award Administration including: project ID setup, deposits, invoicing, letter of credit draws, accounts receivable, financial reports to sponsors, new award/attribute review, audit coordination, project modification request approvals, regulatory checklists, effort reporting and general compliance oversight.The Office of Sponsored Programs and Regulatory Compliance Services ( SPARCS) facilitates the submission of proposals, negotiation of agreements, and the administration of internally funded projects and sub-agreements that provide funding to NC State. This includes all aspects of externally sponsored research and scholarship, from pre-award management to non-fiscal post-award management. SPARCS also maintains primary regulatory compliance responsibilities, including human and animal subjects, conflicts of commitment management, export controls, facility security matters, and research integrity.

SPARCS, is an operating unit in the Office of Research & Innovation, which is responsible for university-wide research activities and directs institutional units that support research, such as research development, research development, research administration, and research compliance. The Office of Research & Innovation is comprised of units responsible for intellectual property protection, technology transfer, and venture development. In addition, there are ten cross-disciplinary centers and institutes.
Essential Job Duties
The Instructional Design Specialist is responsible for administrative and coordination duties related to training and organizational development, including: scheduling training events, recruiting trainers and speakers, working with subject matter experts to ensure courses are designed and executed in accordance with best practices in adult learning, preparing materials, assisting with the marketing of the programs, and ensuring employees are kept abreast of training requirements.
The Instructional Design Specialist will work effectively and collaboratively with subject matter experts to design, develop, implement, transfer, and evaluate courses and course materials that may be delivered in varying formats, e.g., instructor-led; online using interactive technologies; videos; webinars, and blended formats.

Essential job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with needs assessments to identify course needs, recommending appropriate training methods (e.g. classroom, virtual/online or blended), and ensuring that best practices in adult learning are followed
  • Designing and developing effective in-person and web-based courses, including web content, interactive exercises, assessments, and online communication mechanisms in collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs), multimedia specialists, and other professionals
  • Partnering with the training team, SMEs, multimedia specialists, and other professionals in researching, brainstorming, developing, implementing and evaluating innovative and pedagogically-sound solutions for addressing instructional challenges
  • Facilitating programs including train-the-trainer sessions to help SMEs develop/advance instructional skills
  • Assisting with the creation and management of online training programs utilizing Learning Management Systems (LMSs), eLearning software, live online training platforms, social learning spaces, knowledge management programs, microlearning, and other online resources
  • Acting as training administrator for Learning Management System (LMS) platforms, including adding courses, instructors, dates/times and answering questions
  • Managing key websites (e.g. Research Education, RSC, etc.), including updating information, answering questions, and working with SMEs to edit/add content
  • Creating and distributing the Research Support Council (RSC) newsletter and website; identifying content needs, writing, and collecting content submissions
  • Communicating training's, important compliance updates, and other relevant information to the research administration community
  • Creating, administering, and reporting on evaluation surveys, making recommendations for change based on findings
  • Recording and providing training metrics, including enrollment and completion data.
  • Monitoring required training compliance and deadline dates as appropriate
  • Identifying and facilitating the purchase of webinars or other training or training resources from external organizations to offer alternative learning opportunities for credit

Other Responsibilities

  • Keep current on training design and methodology to make recommendations to key stakeholders/leadership regarding trends and/or new methodologies.
  • Support the RSC in coordinative and training tasks as needed.Work closely with the training team to collaborate on all training initiatives.
  • Supervise student worker(s) as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Good written and verbal communication skills, and particularly the ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form
  • Experience planning and implementing training programs/experiences for professionals in business and/or administrative contexts
  • Experience integrating adult learning theory and instructional design principles in the development of training programs/experiences
  • Experience developing and implementing interactive in-person, blended, and e-learning training solutions that incorporate: video, audio, and other multimedia components as appropriate
  • Ability to coordinate, assist, or lead training sessions (in-person/hybrid/remote) as needed to support external SMEs/presenters
  • Experience working with stakeholders to analyze a 'business need' and when appropriate developing suitable training solutions
  • Ability to develop measurable learning objectives and identify appropriate instructional strategies
  • Ability to multiple manage project timelines and ensure quality of finished materials
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and as a team member
  • Ability to adapt to readily changing projects, priorities, schedules, and processes
  • Well-developed attention to detail
  • Prior experience using an LMS, training registration tools, e-learning development software, video and audio software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two plus years of documented professional experience that includes: content design, content development, and regular use of Articulate Storyline or a similar software for designing interactive training content.
  • Relevant professional and academic certifications: APTD, CPTD, CRA, or others
  • Technical writing and editing experience
  • Ability to assist in analyzing departmental/organizational challenges, determining potential types of interventions, and establishing the efficacy of training as a part of a solution
  • Ability to assist with presenter consultations - during conceptualization and development - helping SME/presenters understand and implement facilitation techniques that improve engagement
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders on a single project
  • Knowledge of group/team dynamics and ability to facilitate meetings
  • Experience in compliance and/or research administration training development and implementation
  • Awareness of usability and accessibility considerations in instructional design
  • Prior experience using Moodle, Reporter, Captivate, Articulate, Rise, Camtasia, Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere, and/or similar platform/software programs
