THE POSITION

This role functions as a Driver License Examiner for PennDOT, holding a vital responsibility in enhancing highway safety through the administration of standardized tests that assess the abilities and qualifications of individuals applying for non-commercial driver licenses. In addition to performing these evaluations, the examiner also engages with customers at the Driver License Center, where a key aspect of their duties involves scrutinizing identity documents to prevent identity theft and fraudulent activities.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will assess the physical and driving qualifications of applicants, as well as evaluate the mechanical condition of vehicles to ensure they meet the established safety standards for driving. You will conduct various vision tests, including telebinocular and color perception assessments, to gauge applicants' visual capabilities. Additionally, you will administer both non-commercial and commercial driver license knowledge examinations to verify that individuals possess a comprehensive understanding of the Vehicle Code and traffic signage.

You will also oversee the administration of pre-trip, skills, and driving tests for non-commercial driver licenses, adhering to departmental standards. This includes scrutinizing applications, registrations, and permits for any signs of irregularities or fraudulent activity. You will determine the necessary vehicle characteristics to ensure that the appropriate tests are conducted and inspect motor vehicles for compliance with safety features such as inspection stickers, lights, and windshield wipers. Furthermore, you will review various documents, including applications, birth certificates, Social Security cards, marriage certificates, court documents, proof of residency, and immigration-related documents, to verify their authenticity.

Your responsibilities will extend to accessing multiple systems and databases to authenticate identity documents, thereby establishing an individual's identity and eligibility for a driver's license or identification card. You will play a crucial role in identifying fraudulent activities and preventing identity theft. After processing test results and applications, you will issue driver licenses and identification cards to qualified applicants. You will also provide customers with essential information regarding driver's license renewals, duplicates, out-of-state transfers, and the requirements for obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), including knowledge of various restrictions and endorsements. Additionally, you will generate Restoration Requirements Letters upon request for customers who visit in person, ensuring clear communication of relevant information.
