Customs Compliance Specialist - Temporary

This temporary position carries out the duties and responsibilities necessary to file foreign vessel repair entries IAW the Code of Federal Regulations 19USC1466, in support of the commercial fleet. The temporary Customs Compliance Specialist will work closely with outside legal counsel, sourcing agents, vessel masters, and the technical organization to orchestrate the various processes to ensure compliance IAW 19USC1466.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with ship captains and vessel managers to obtain necessary documents and reports for customs forms.

  • Prepare and send customs forms to port agents and ship captains before the ships arrive.

  • Collect invoices and report expenses to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on time.

  • Review and monitor foreign expenses to request duty relief.

  • Handle customs clearance for any parts brought into U.S. ports from ships.

  • Communicate with ships, company agents, and technical teams through emails and calls.

  • Complete and coordinate documents for ship repairs, including working with legal counsel and reporting final costs.

  • Ensure all possible cost savings for ship repairs are requested and file follow-up protests with CBP if needed.

  • Responsible the entire customs and transportation process for foreign ship repairs.

  • Perform other position related duties as specified by management

Position Specifications:

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in customs compliance, logistics, procurement, or a related field. Experience in the maritime industry, particularly with vessel operations and repairs, would be highly preferred.

Technical Skills and Competencies Required

  • Must have computer skills in Microsoft Word, Windows, Outlook, and Excel.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with vessel masters, managers, port agents, and technical teams.

  • Ability to prepare and manage customs forms, invoices, and other necessary documentation accurately and on time.

  • Problem solving ability to handle issues related to customs clearance, vendor invoices, and foreign expenditures.

  • Managing multiple tasks, such as preparing dry dock and casualty packages, coordinating with legal counsel, and reporting final costs.

  • Ability to analyze financial data, evaluate foreign expenditures, and apply relevant rulings to request duty relief.
