The NBE Division includes the Faculties of Architecture, Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Geospatial Information Systems, and Urban Planning & Design. Director, Division of Natural and Built Environment (Associate or Full Professor) (Architecture, Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Geosciences (Geology and GIS), and Urban Planning) The Division of Natural and Built Environment (NBE) at UMKC invites applications for the Director of NBE, which is an Associate or Full Professor tenure-track (tenured) faculty position with the additional administrative duties of managing the division. SSE seeks an Associate or Full Professor in one of the disciplines within the division, architecture, civil engineering, environmental studies. geosciences, urban planning or design. SSE requests candidates that will be effective leaders and administrators, who will create and work with the NBE faculty to implement a vision of multidisciplinary research and education. The vision of collaborative research, educational initiatives, community involvement, and creativity are essential. The NBE Division Director must be capable of leading this multidisciplinary faculty, managing the divisional finances, and creating short-and long-term strategies for growth in enrollments, research and programs. SSE invites applications for persons that will be a collaborative colleague, director, who will continue with an outstanding research program with a commitment to student success. As a director, the workload will include administrative duties, teaching (reduced load), research, and professional service. The position is a 9-month academic position with additional pay to cover an additional 3 months of administrative duties. Specifically, the Divisional Directors are responsible for the overarching performance of their division, communicating between administration and their divisional faculty, and advocating for the divisional needs. The Divisional Director leads their division with the goal of elevating the division relative to key areas as defined by the system, university, school, and division. Specific duties will include these elements along with any other necessary duties as assigned by the dean and administration. The Division Director will be: * A member of the SSE Dean's Leadership Team. * An advisor to the Dean relative to divisional needs for staff, faculty, equipment, space, and teaching/research support. * A liaison and two-way communicator between the Dean and their faculty relative to university, school, and divisional opportunities, strategies, policies, and needs. * An advisor to the Dean's staff and administrators relative their division, needs, issues and expectations. * An administrator responsible for advising, creating, and implementing the divisional budget. * An academic manager responsible for divisional faculty workload assignments, evaluations, promotion and tenure reviews, and divisional service. * A manager responsible for overseeing instructional assignments, scheduling, GTA assignments and budgeting, adjunct and faculty hires, and other administrative duties. * An overseer of the respective accreditation documentation and processes. * A research faculty member within NBE. Qualifications
A terminal degree in the relevant divisional areas of emphasis, disciplines, and rank of Associate or Full Professor or eligibility for such tenured positions at UMKC. A strong ability to bring people from different disciplines together to work toward a common goal, and to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in academia, professional societies, related industries, and civic organizations. * Experience in academic administration as a Dean, Associate Dean, Department Chair/Head, Associate Department Chair/Head, or Program Director. Experience in working with faculty on policy and processes. * Experience in (departmental) budgeting. * Experience with an active research program, including publishing, PhD mentoring, and grant funding. * Commitment to the implementation of the vision, mission and goals of NBE, SSE, and UMKC. * Significant attributes of strategic, creative (visionary), excellent leadership skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, tact and confidentiality, and ability to balance morale building with accountability. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with rank, success in externally funded research, credentials, and experience.
