Job Description
This position can be based in St Charles, IL, Greensboro NC or Durham NC. Participates in and leads the design phase of a project beginning with analysis of the objectives, creative structural design and engineering of working prototypes, and on into production while meeting all manufacturing criteria and customer expectations. Provides visual solutions for packaging, advertising, and sales support needs by creating designs and copy layouts.
Responsibilities:
- Lead packaging design projects from inception into production and maintain effective communication to the team.
* Assesses information provided by clients, business development, sales, manufacturing, and project managers to create innovative structural design solutions, considering visual and structural integrity and cost effective manufacturability and assembly.
* Designs and produces visual communication in a variety of formats and materials, including structural prototypes, mock-ups, three-dimensional drawings, illustrative renderings, technical drawings, and assembly instructions.
* Consistently interact directly with clients as the subject matter expert to obtain project related information and provide guidance on design reasoning.
* Ensure new designs are created for optimum efficiency for production.
* Create high-end, flawless packaging prototypes for customer presentations.
* Create organized, clear, and consistent specifications, dielines, and BOMs.
* Be able to interpret concrete and abstract direction from clients, sales and management to develop a solution that exceeds customer expectations.
* Work collaboratively with design team members to identify and develop the best possible packaging solution.
* Effectively communicate reasoning behind design decisions.
* Maintain clear organization of large ongoing projects involving a multitude of components and revisions.
* Remain up to date on new packaging trends, materials, and technology.
Qualifications
- Able to apply broad work experience and knowledge when analyzing complex problems. Must be able consistently identify critical elements, variables and alternatives to develop solutions.
- Must be able to organize/prioritize existing resources and incorporate new information, as needed, to implement the most effective solutions. Able to communicate clearly and courteously with those who need to know of decisions/actions/problems. Able to apply excellent business acumen and collaborative skills when resolving problems.
- Able to mentor junior level team members in the use of tools and/or systems in the position.
- Requires excellent communication skills with ability to state messages in a clear manner by using language that is easy for others to understand. Able to explain programs policies and procedures in language that is understood by others. .
- Must be able to modify communication style both formal and informal to match the appropriate level of the audience targeted. Requires strong understanding of the impact of a message on the organization or customer. Able to write with the clarity and precision necessary for the work being performed.
- Must be able to proactively listen to others to understand issues and situations.
- Must have strong knowledge of packaging manufacturing equipment, processes and capabilities.
- Must have advanced knowledge of packaging prototyping equipment and processes.
- Must have a sense of urgency.
- Able to apply strong functional computer knowledge. Advanced knowledge of ArtiosCAD required. Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft products preferred. Solidworks / Rhino 3D experience a plus.
- May require knowledge of or ability to quickly learn specialized software to complete work assignments.
- Knowledge of packaging testing procedures- ISTA, TAPPI, ASTM.
- Occasional Travel may be required.
Additional Information
RRD's current salary range for this role is $90,800 to $145,400 / year. The salary range may be adjusted based on the applicable geographic location of the hired employee, and the range may change in the future.At RRD, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions may vary based upon, but not limited to education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift and location. Depending on the role, in addition to base salary, the total compensation package may also include participation in a bonus, commission or incentive program.
