HJF is seeking a Scientist I to perform research and/or development for the Biomarker Analysis (BA) Division at the Military Traumatic Brain Injury Initiative (MTBI2) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, in the Department of Neurology in Bethesda, Maryland. This is the first of four levels within the Scientist series. The position will work in collaboration with other HJF and MTBI2 scientific and technical staff. The incumbent will perform laboratory analysis procedures using a variety of technical approaches and cutting edge techniques for biomarker analyses independently and/or with team. They will formulate experimental designs, protocols, and hypotheses, which will involve specialized bioanalytical procedures. May exercise technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of BA experiments that contribute to project completion.

Responsibilities

  • Perform periodical equipment maintenance and maintain usage/service logs, and assist lab equipment and supply inventory. Place merchandise orders via purchasing system.
  • Safely receive and process clinical and research samples. Organize and inventory samples in accordance with requirements to ensure personnel safety and sample integrity. Execute highly-skilled and specialized laboratory BA research including high-throughput, ultra-sensitive neurological and immunological immunoassay analyses.
  • Support biomarker analysis protocol development. Perform data requisition, analysis and interpretation.
  • Document ongoing or new research procedures for sample selection, data collection, data processing, and statistical estimation.
  • Make scientific observations and maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, ensuring documentation fulfills accepted professional/industry/regulatory standards.
  • Prepare written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
  • Prepare presentations and disseminates research findings in seminars and conferences.
  • Stay current on technical and scientific advances.
  • Train junior laboratory staff or visiting scientists for equipment operations and data acquisitions as needed.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required trainings, meetings, conferences, and others for the role.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctorate Degree required. Preferred field of study is Neuroscience or related disciplines
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of standard biomedical laboratory safety and regulations.
  • Knowledge of complex life science laboratory procedures and experienced in biochemistry assay procedures. Neuroscience background is preferred.
  • Experience in processing and handling clinical tissue and/or biofluid samples.
  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques; excellent critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines of projects and multi-tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Experience with statistical analyses is required. Experience with omics and pathway studies is beneficial.
  • Experience with biomarker research is beneficial.
  • Experience with traumatic brain injury or other neurological diseases is beneficial.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
  • Travel and attending conference may occasionally be required.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $73,800-$97,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
