Essential Job Duties
The Irwin Lab studies the disease ecology of the gut parasite Crithidia bombi in native bees. Our research seeks to understand the medicinal effect of pollen and the transmission of parasites between bumble bees and solitary bees. Lab work includes conducting experiments on bumble bees and solitary bees, performing dissections, quantifying parasite loads under a microscope, and general insect husbandry. The Research Technician is expected to run experiments using standard protocols, maintain bumble bee colonies, manage hourly undergraduate workers in the lab, collaborate with graduate students in their research, and attend bi-weekly lab meetings. Additionally, the Technician is responsible for ordering supplies and managing the lab.
