THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue (DOR) has an exciting opportunity available for a detail-oriented individual as a Tax Examiner 1. Within this role, you will be responsible for the examination, processing, proper allocation of tax payments and credits, and review of correspondence in response to individual tax notices. Your training will provide you with a comprehensive working knowledge of the Commonwealth's tax laws, rules, and regulations. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As Tax Examiner 1, you will be instructed in examining, processing, adjusting, and applying tax credits to individual tax returns. Training includes reviewing legal documents, internal and external resource materials, and correspondence received in response to tax notices. Your attention to detail skills will be utilized as you examine and mathematically verify individual tax returns and schedules for accuracy and verify those amounts carry over to the correct line on tax returns. You will have the opportunity to respond verbally and in writing to inquiries received from internal and external stakeholders that inquire about the status of returns or require an explanation of discrepancies or adjustments.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time, with the exception of in office training for 6 months and Commonwealth Policy 1 day a month in office. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $39,785 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of general office work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirement:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirement:

  • This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
