Position: Senior Forensic Fire Protection Engineer

Department: Commercial, Institutional & Architects (CIA)

Reporting Relationship: Director, Commercial

Location: Remote or in one of our offices: Roseville, MN; Minnetonka, MN; Lexington, KY; or Cincinnati, OH

POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Forensic Fire Protection Engineer will report to the Senior Fire Protection Project Manager and work closely with our Senior Fire Protection Engineer. They will primarily be responsible for conducting loss investigations where a fire protection system, fire spread, or fire code issues are involved.

The position will require the ability to perform a thorough examination of available evidence to determine the cause of a fire protection system failure, possibly the origin and cause of a fire, and factors contributing to the spread of fire, as well as evaluate the performance of fire protection systems during a fire event. The successful candidate will be able to develop opinions and conclusions based on NFPA 921, the Scientific Method, engineering principles, and sound engineering judgment backed by appropriate experience.

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Observation/Inspection of losses caused by fire or fire protection system failures
  • Collect and examine data at the site of a loss
  • Document evidence and other investigation findings
  • Ability to photograph damage and evidence related to fires or losses
  • Provide system failure analysis
  • Research and write expert reports
  • Interview witnesses, property owners, and building occupants to obtain information during an investigation
  • Testifying in court cases involving investigated losses
  • Additional duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering Registration.
  • 10+ years of experience within fire protection and/or forensics engineering.
  • Of the 10+ years of experience, 8+ must be within a forensics capacity.
  • Understand the scientific method and the ability to apply it to a loss investigation.
  • Remain current in the subjects listed as 'requisite knowledge' as related to fire investigations in NFPA 1033.
  • Ability to analyze the site of a loss and develop a list of possible failures.
  • Knowledge of active and passive fire protection systems.
  • Highly motivated, professional demeanor with a "can do" attitude.
  • Team-oriented and strong work ethic.
  • Proficient and accurate data entry skills necessary.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, shift focus if needed to assist other staff.
  • Maintain a well-organized system to account for various information processed.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Travel: Will include 50% or more of domestic travel.

Preferred

  • FSFPE, CFEI, CFPS, CFPE, and/or, CWBSP
  • Ability to teach and mentor others as called upon in the capacity as a subject matter expert.
  • Desire to mentor others.
  • Active in a Trade Organization.
  • Experience with public speaking (teaching, tradeshows, conferences, etc).

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to navigate fire scenes, crawl, climb, use ladders
  • Some work locations will feature the tough terrain typical of construction sites or require lifting or moving field testing equipment.

Salary Range: $150,000 - $200,000 annually. The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual qualifications, experience, work location, and education. This position is eligible for an annual bonus.
