Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:



  • Review and evaluate consumer loan applications, including personal loans, auto loans, and home equity loans, to assess creditworthiness and risk.
  • Make final decisions on loan applications within delegated authority and provide recommendations for loans that exceed approval limits.
  • Review and manage exceptions or unique loan scenarios that fall outside standard guidelines, offering solutions while balancing risk and member needs.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior underwriters, helping them develop their underwriting skills and knowledge.
  • Communicate loan decisions, including declines or counteroffers, to members professionally and clearly.
  • Work closely with the loan processing, sales, and collections teams to facilitate smooth loan origination processes and resolve any outstanding issues.



Minimum Qualifications:



  • Associate's degree in Finance, Business, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in consumer lending or underwriting, or in a related financial services role.
  • Strong understanding of credit analysis, loan underwriting processes, and risk assessment.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements, such as Fair Lending laws and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA).
  • Proficiency in using loan origination systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Certification in credit analysis or underwriting (e.g., CUNA Credit Union Certified Underwriter) can be a plus.
