Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary
The Research Technician's primary responsibility will be conducting laboratory automated nutrient analyses and assist with high performance liquid chromatography ( HPLC), fluorometric pigment, TOC, POC and DOC analyses. The Technician will also participate in UNC's long-term water quality monitoring (Neuse River, Pamlico Sound, FerryMon) programs both in North Carolina and other US locations. The technician will perform minor repairs and operate equipment with limited supervision. The technician will also maintain inventory of equipment and related research materials. Data analysis and application of simple statistics will be conducted as part of this position. The technician will also help conduct filed and lab experiments and filter environmental water samples. Responsibilities also include maintaining accurate records for the field and lab, and preparing and submitting analysis invoices for the UNC-CH Environmental Microbiology Recharge Center. The technician will contribute to publications, reports and presentations.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with laboratory chemistry and/or analytical techniques, previous field experience. Also required working knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Knowledge of nutrient chemistry, other laboratory analyses. Previous field sampling experience (specifics are in the job announcement). Handling and managing and reporting data, knowledge of related software and assisting with publications.
