Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Special Assistant to the Provost for Academic Program Planning position is being created to develop a detailed and actionable plan for establishing an academic health sciences center, including strategic, operational, and financial considerations, in alignment with UNCW's vision and institutional strengths as well as with the needs of the region. Key deliverables for this position include benchmarking and analysis, stakeholder engagement, differentiation strategy, curriculum framework, physical infrastructure assessment, personnel needs, accreditation and compliance, financial analysis, and timeline and implementation plan. The position will report directly to the Provost and work closely with the chancellor and the dean of the College of Health and Human Services. The position will also lead and facilitate a larger institutional task force related to this work. Additional activities with non-campus stakeholders (e.g., health professionals, community leaders, donors, legislators, etc.,) are also expected to occur. It is expected that site visits, focus groups and interviews may be necessary to fully achieve the key deliverables. The position will also require regular communications (updates and interim reports) to ensure alignment with UNCW's visions and goals.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • An earned doctorate in a directly related academic discipline or a doctorate in medicine (MD); all degrees must be from an accredited institution.
  • Ten years of progressively responsible experience working with faculty, academic program administration, or medical program staff in a higher education or healthcare setting.

  • Understanding of finances and the relationship between academic priorities and budget management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with campus leadership and external stakeholders.

  • Commitment to partnering with external constituencies and the ability to contribute to and lead development efforts.
  • High degree of personal and professional integrity paired with a fair, collaborative, and transparent leadership style that will succeed in an environment of shared governance.
  • Ability to thrive in the public and community through well-developed political and diplomatic skills and capacity to externally represent the institution's missions and goals.
  • Ability to plan, organize, motivate, mentor, direct and assess the work of others.
  • Project planning, program management and process improvement skills to make informed judgments, develop solutions for complex problems, and lead in a results-driven fashion.
  • Excellent computer and financial modeling skills, including Microsoft Excel, as well as honed analytical skills and demonstration of consistent attention to detail.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington ( UNCW) is one of the 17 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina ( UNC). The Division of Academic Affairs is the organizational unit at UNCW that houses the academic and administrative units charged with evolving, advancing, and operationalizing the core academic mission of the institution.
