We are seeking anAssistant Director, Office of Student Lifewho will be responsible for providing support to a diverse graduate student and learner population at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) through new student onboarding & orientation programming, advising Student Assembly leadership, and support for Student Assembly infrastructure. The Assistant Director will also provide triage, support, assistance, and direct follow-up for BSPH graduate students and learners who are in distress and/or are encountering personal/nonacademic barriers to effective performance in their academics and/or research. This role uses interventions, referrals, and follow-up services to provide a personalized, high-touch, and customized response to address individual student/learner issues in areas such as physical or mental health, finances, interpersonal issues within the university, conduct, and work/life balance. While strong, supportive relationships may develop with students and learners, the Assistant Director does not engage in individual therapeutic relationships or psychological counseling. The position reports to the Director of Student Life. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required as job duties demand. Specific Duties and Responsibilities
New Student Orientation & Onboarding
- Coordinate several educational and social programs within new student onboarding and orientation.
- Establish and maintain pivotal relationships with academic department partners toward the creation of an integrated and intentional new student orientation and onboarding experience.
- Support the execution of orientation and onboarding program logistics.
Student Assembly Advising & Infrastructure
- Serve as the primary advisor to several members of the Student Assembly Executive Board including the Co-Vice Presidents for Quality of Life, Co-Vice Presidents for Social and Cultural Affairs, and Vice President for Student Groups.
- Oversee the annual training processes for Student Assembly and student group leadership.
- Coordinate the annual re-registration of recognized student groups in partnership with the Vice President for student Groups.
- Support the management of Hopkins Groups as a student engagement tool.
Student Support
- Meet individually with students and learners as needed to support their progress, escalating cases when appropriate.
- Collect, evaluate, and record all facts pertaining to student cases via Maxient that come in through online management and/or referrals; prepare reports as needed.
- Provide referrals to support services within the University.
- Follow up and track cases to ensure they are provided adequate support.
- Serve as a member of the BSPH Student CARE Team in their efforts to provide high quality, systems based student support and oversee ongoing student support related projects.
- Manage the Emergency Grant funding infrastructure including processing applications, committee notification, and student communications.
- Assist in training and advising faculty, staff, students and internal stakeholders on managing graduate students/learners of concern.
- Consult with faculty and staff regarding incidents of students of concern including recommended engagement and interventions.
- Oversee Johns Hopkins BSPH web-based student support resources in collaboration with the Associate Director of Communications.
Other
- Manage day-to-day operations for the Office of Student Life including the office inbox, student staff, etc.
- Serve as a resource for newly admitted students during visitors' days.
- Provide on-call support for emergency issues.
- Serve on a variety of university-wide and School-based working groups and committees on the topic of student support, case management, and basic needs.
- Other projects/duties as assigned. The Employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Three years of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, or related field strongly preferred. Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
- Experience working directly with faculty on behalf of students of concern strongly preferred.
- Experience working as part of a case management team and navigating complex, decentralized environments strongly preferred.
- Experience with diverse, as well as international graduate and/or postdoctoral fellow populations at a research university preferred.
- Experience developing programs and resources for a diverse learner population.
- Experience providing student advising and/or support.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Available to respond to crisis situations outside of normal university operating hours.
- Have knowledge of student services/educational software applications (for example: SIS, Maxient, etc.);
- Willingness to learn more about public health.
