Engineering Technician I-III (Survey)

Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY:

This is a technical position responsible for providing support to the Engineering Department. The technician will perform general engineering duties, including CAD drafting, improvement plan and permits review and site inspections requiring technical training equivalent to that represented by an associate degree, technical school, or previous experience.

ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I

$28.53/hr.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports supervisor to plan, manage, and execute capital improvement program (CIP) civil infrastructure projects.
  • Drafts correspondence and reports.
  • Reviews documents and comments on plans for conformance with City standards.
  • Operates a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices on a regular basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma, general education degree (GED) or equivalent.
  • Certificate/Licensures CAD or Engineering related program.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:

  • Vehicle Operator's license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.

REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering, the design, construction, and maintenance of public works projects.
  • Proficiency in the use of personal computers and software programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Ability to make field inspections, analyze and recommend solutions.

OTHER DESIRABLES:

  • Demonstration of effective communication skills across a varied organization.
  • Proficient technical knowledge and experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Working knowledge of engineering and surveying systems and methods.
  • Ability to assess field construction conditions and make recommendations.
  • Knowledge, experience with and understanding of building, plumbing and electrical codes.

ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN II

$30.67/hr.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs tasks to include all Engineering Technician I duties and responsibilities.
  • Assists and mentors Engineering Technician I personnel.
  • Under the technical guidance and support of the Supervisor:
    1. Utilizes to produce minor designs of roadways, utilities, earthwork, intersection improvements, paths, sidewalks, and related projects.
    2. Reviews plans and permits, and technical specification packages for compliance with established City, State or civil design standards and codes.
    3. Researches and prepares presentations to citizens and citizen/advocacy groups, private development community, the Planning Commission, Mayor and Board meetings, Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC).
    4. Produce plans, exhibits and technical drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Drafts correspondence and reports.
  • Operates a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices on a regular basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Experience or training with Survey related computation programs and GIS applications.
  • Demonstration of effective communication skills across a varied organization.
  • Knowledge, experience with and understanding of building, plumbing and electrical codes.
  • Working knowledge of engineering and survey systems and methods.
  • Ability to assess field construction conditions and make recommendations.

ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN III

$32.97/hr.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs tasks to include all Engineering Technician I & II duties and responsibilities.
  • Assists and mentors Engineering Technician I & II personnel.
  • Serves as representative for the Division Supervisor in their absence.
  • Operates a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices on a regular basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Associate Degree and/or Certificate from Technical School.
  • Five (5) years of engineering technician experience or experience with regulatory agency and/or experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
