Description

The schedule for this position will be Friday - Monday, 6:30am - 3:00pm. The duration will be from May 16, 2025 - September 1, 2025.

The Maintenance Technician - Temporary performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of County parks, open spaces and trails, and associated equipment and facilities and operates a variety of maintenance vehicles, equipment, and tools to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Sets up and tears down special events.

Duties

  • Performs maintenance, repair and landscaping duties on County parks, open space, trails, sports fields, fairgrounds and other related facilities.
  • Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and stewardship of landscaped areas and open space. Clear debris from walks, fields, trails, shelters and other facilities.
  • Supplemental watering of trees, shrubs, and grasses.
  • Install, repair, and inspect playground equipment, fences and other related equipment and facilities.
  • Operate and maintain landscaping and maintenance equipment including County vehicles, power washers, blowers, weed eaters and other power tools.
  • Inspect parks for damage, vandalism, broken equipment or hazardous conditions and report findings to supervisor.
  • Pick up trash and remove litter from all County parks and grounds.
  • Perform routine maintenance on all park restrooms and drinking fountains.
  • Understand and adhere to safe work practices and procedures.

Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
  • Basic principles and practices of park, open space, and trail maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Ability to perform semi-skilled and skilled construction, including heavy manual labor, maintenance and repair of parks, open space and trails and their related facilities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including County officials and the general public.
  • Ability to conduct routine inspections of parks and trails, including equipment and facilities.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduation or GED equivalent
  • Sixmonths of park, open space, trail or landscape maintenance experience
  • Or adequately demonstrate these skills during the application and interview process:
    • Follow and implement work assignments.
    • Work independently, after receiving instruction, to accurately and responsibly complete tasks.
    • Be committed to meeting work objectives such as meeting deadlines, consistently arriving to work on time and ready to work, willingness to learn and follow instructions.
    • Be comfortable working outdoors, around motorized hand tools and other equipment.
    • Perform the physical requirements of the job.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.

Supplemental Information

Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR), background check, physical capabilities examination and drug screen.
  • Possession of a valid Class "R" Colorado Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment.

Post-Employment Requirements:
  • Must maintain a good driving record in accordance with Arapahoe County Risk Management Guidelines.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Employee works indoors and out-of-doors; most of his/her time is spent in the field in often extreme weather conditions and rough terrain.
  • Employees in this position may be exposed to all the dangers of working outside, including but not limited to: pollen, animal dander, peanuts and other allergens, snakes and insects, bites and stings and similar hazards.
  • Employee works alongside crew members, community service workers and volunteers for the purposes of task accomplishment.
  • Work during evenings, weekends or irregular hours will be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The following are some of the physical demands commonly associated with this position.
  • Spends 20% of the time sitting and 80% of the time either upright or walking.
  • Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls or pushes up to 80 lbs.
  • Occasionally uses cart, dolly, or other equipment to carry in excess of 80 lbs.
  • Occasionally climbs, stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls and crouches while performing office or work duties.
  • Verbal and auditory capacity enabling constant interpersonal communication through automated devices, such as telephones, radios, and similar; and in public meetings and personal interactions.
  • Constant use of eye, hand and finger coordination enabling the use of automated office machinery or equipment.
  • Visual capacity enabling constant use of computer or other work-related equipment.

Definitions:
Occasionally: Activity exists less than 1/3 of the time.
Frequently: Activity exists between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time.
Constantly: Activity exists more than 2/3 of the time.
