Overview

The Bathymetric Lidar Specialist is responsible for executing airborne bathymetric lidar surveys. This role blends sensor operation, data acquisition, and data processing to ensure the successful collection of high-quality geospatial datasets over coastal, riverine, and shallow-water environments. The specialist will work closely with pilots, field teams, and technical staff to plan, execute, and process airborne bathymetric lidar data, including domestic and international operations.

Responsibilities

Airborne Data Acquisition & Sensor Operations (40%)

    Operate airborne bathymetric lidar sensors during flight missions
  • Work closely with pilots and flight crews to optimize data collection and ensure safe operations
  • Ensure lidar calibration, GNSS/IMU synchronization, and real-time quality monitoring
  • Troubleshoot and install sensor systems as needed in aircraft
  • Download, document, and securely transfer collected geospatial data daily
  • Adapt data acquisition strategies to international operational environments

Data Processing & QA/QC (40%)

  • Receive and organize airborne topobathymetric lidar datasets for processing
  • Perform quality checks, trajectory reviews, and initial lidar processing using tools like RiProcess, POSPac, and TerraSolid
  • Identify and mitigate sources of error in bathymetric and topographic datasets
  • Maintain structured file management and documentation best practices
  • Collaborate with data analysts to ensure deliverables meet accuracy requirements
  • Ensure internationally acquired data meets regulatory and client-specific accuracy standards

Flight Planning & Logistics (20%)

  • Mission Planning - Assist in developing flight plans, sensor configurations, and operational checklists
  • Project Tracking - Maintain real-time status of ongoing and upcoming missions, including aircraft availability and environmental conditions
  • Logistics & Deployment - Coordinate equipment, flight permits, and personnel to ensure smooth operations and minimize downtime
  • Communication & Coordination - Serve as a liaison between field crews, project managers, and data processing teams for seamless data handoff
  • Resource Optimization - Track sensor usage, flight hours, and acquisition conditions to improve efficiency and future planning


Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in remote sensing, geospatial sciences, engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years of experience in airborne topobathymetric lidar acquisition or processing
  • Familiarity with airborne topobathymetric lidar sensors and flight operations
  • Experience with geospatial data management, GNSS survey methods, and bathymetric data processing
  • Valid driver's license and ability to lift 50+ lbs
  • Ability to travel extensively, including internationally

Preferred:

  • Aviation background (experience working in airborne survey operations, flight crews, or aerial data collection)
  • Experience with lidar post-processing software (RiProcess, LSS, HexMap, POSPac, Applanix, TerraSolid)
  • Experience in bathymetric survey techniques, GNSS/IMU integration, and data calibration
  • Knowledge of environmental conditions affecting bathymetric lidar penetration and accuracy
  • Prior experience in multi-sensor integration (e.g., lidar + multispectral/hyperspectral imaging)
  • Experience with international survey logistics, permitting, and compliance
  • CPR/First Aid certification

Skills & Attributes:

  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills in airborne lidar acquisition and processing
  • Ability to work independently in remote field environments, including airborne survey conditions
  • Effective communication and technical writing skills for documenting acquisition and project updates
  • Adaptability in fast-paced, dynamic work environments with non-traditional schedules
  • Ability to navigate international operational challenges, including regulatory compliance and logistics
