Position Summary Information
Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's Degree
- Three (3) years of experience working in aquatic facility management
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Certification or must attain within 6 months of hire
- Current American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor Certification or must attain within 6 months of hire
- Current American Red Cross WSI Certification or must attain within 6 months of hire
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) required or must attain within 6 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications |
- Master's Degree
- Two (2) years of full-time/professional level experience working in a leadership capacity in aquatic facility management with an emphasis on staff development, staff supervision, and risk management. Two (2) years as a Graduate Assistant equals one (1) year of work experience
- Experience working in an aquatics facility in a collegiate recreation setting
- Current American Red Cross Instructor Trainer Certification in Lifeguarding, WSI, and CPR/AED/Frist Aid or must obtain within 1 year of employment
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Instructor Certification or must obtain within 1 year of employment
- Experience with Innosoft Fusion, Connect2Concepts, and When2Work software
- Active involvement in national organizations related to aquatics (AOAP, NIRSA, NRPA, etc.)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
Program Operations
- Develop and implement a plan to intentionally create opportunities with everyone in mind.
- Provide leadership, direction, and supervision to all aspects of Aquatics and Risk Management.
- Complete appropriate processes to recruit, hire, train, certify, supervise, and evaluate all staff.
- In coordination with the UREC Communications team, design and implement all program area outreach strategies, including social media, website, and special events.
- Completes and maintains accurate required statistical reports, incident reports, operational logs, and other paperwork as required and necessary as requested by the Associate Director, Director, or outside entity.
- Revise and maintain up-to-date policy manuals for all Aquatic staffing areas and standard operating procedures for all Aquatic facility spaces.
- Design and oversee implementation of all aspects of the Aquatic Programs: scheduling, staffing, maintenance, programming, promotion, and budget.
- Design and oversee implementation of all aspects of the department risk management plan: creation, assessment, revisions, and implementation.
- Coordinate the usage of resources and facility space with the Assistant Director of Facilities and Operations for all programs that use the pool.
- Maintain a comprehensive aquatic program equipment inventory.
- Monitor aquatic trends and recommend programs and risk management policy and procedure modifications.
- Ensure administrative tasks, implementation, and overall design for Aquatics and Risk Management programs exudes a high degree of quality and accuracy.
Student Development
- Design, coordinate, and lead training opportunities that focus on the growth and development of student self-awareness and employability skill sets.
- Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, development, and evaluation of approximately 60 student employees including lifeguards, swim instructors, program assistants and managers, and a graduate assistant.
- Ensure effective onboarding and training plans are implemented for all aquatic student staff.
- Design, implement, and deliver skill-based staff training and leadership seminars to teach and evaluate competencies of student staff in safety protocols for the aquatics facility.
- Teach Lifeguard and CPR/AED/First Aid classes for student staff and App State community participants (Instructor training will be provided by UREC).
- Develop and coordinate staff appreciation initiatives.
Fiscal Management
- Per department guidelines and direction, develop, protect, defend, revise and monitor all assigned departmental budgets.
- Responsible for all budgetary decisions related to Aquatics and Risk Management as well as making recommendations related to capital expenditures.
- Responsible for overseeing an annual budget of $165,000.
- Plan, budget, administer, and complete monthly reconciliations related to assigned accounts.
- Produce, monitor, and approve payroll.
Risk Management
- Responsible for knowing all bather and health codes for maintaining safe pool operations.
- Identifies, supports and assists in the completion of aquatic facility cleaning responsibilities; oversees assigned special projects and assists with pool operations including water circulation, chemical delivery and filtration.
- Oversee pool water testing, administering chemicals to maintain proper operational levels, chemical supply ordering, and proper storage of chemicals.
- Create a comprehensive maintenance plan for assessment and replacement of equipment and completing capital projects within the Aquatics area.
- Coordinate with Facilities and Operations team and vendors for regular maintenance, repairs, and inspections to ensure optimal facility functionality and compliance with safety and health standards.
- Through coordination with the University's Department of Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management, establish and maintain a comprehensive risk management plan for the department.
- Through coordination with the University's Department of Environmental, Health, Safety, and Emergency Management, schedule all routine fire and safety inspections including sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, and AEDs.
- Maintain staff certifications for the department including CPR/AED/First Aid, Instructor Certifications, and other certifications deemed necessary by the department.
- Design, manage, and work with program areas to deliver safety audits for all areas of the department.
- Provide continuing education related to risk management, emergency response plans, and routine evaluation and assessment of department risk management practices.
- Ensure internal and external inspections of the pool are occurring at recommended intervals based on industry standards and health department codes.
- Coordinate and assist with routine facility maintenance for all areas of responsibility.
Departmental Leadership and Support
- Establish effective and positive rapport with program staff, university personnel, students, and University Recreation users.
- In conjunction with the University Recreation (UREC) Pro-Staff, participate, lead, and/or coordinate departmental initiatives, including Fall Training, Fall and Spring Hiring Sessions, etc.
- Provide departmental and divisional support by participating in various hiring committees and Student Affairs events and initiatives.
- Participate in UREC Committees, Work Teams, and other areas within the department to advance departmental strategic goals and objectives.
- Continue professional development by participating in professional organizations and regular continuing education.
