This position follows clearly detailed specific procedures in completing several repetitive clerical steps performed in a prescribed or slightly varied sequence, such as coding and filing documents in an extensive alphabetical file; could involve simple posting to individual accounts, opening mail, calculating and posting charges to departmental accounts, operating basic office equipment, e.g., photocopier, facsimile, multiline phone/voicemail systems, mailing machines and minimal computer programs. Possesses beginning to working knowledge of subject matter. Handles basic issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher level staff.

$20.28 Hourly Wage

Primary Duties

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. These duties and responsibilities will be rated on the Annual Performance Review.

  • Performs tasks associated with mail processing and distribution.
  • Sorts and collates incoming mail for distribution and dispatches outgoing mail.
  • Places mail in proper buckets/tubs for dissemination.
  • Receives outgoing mail and applies correct postage.
  • Maintains postage records and updates filing, inventory, mailing and database systems.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform x-ray scan using an x-ray machine to scan all mail and packages for security of customers if required by contract. If required at site, pull bags to be sent at the end of the day.
  • Follow HAZMAT procedures for handling potentially hazardous mail.
  • Process unidentifiable mail by opening and reading mail so appropriate distribution can be completed.
  • Process machinable mail (folding, inserting, sealing, and opening) as needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Certification(s)

  • High School Diploma, or General Educational Development (GED) required.
  • Experience in operating various mailroom machines required.
  • One-year experience in work related field preferred. Relative work experience is determined per contract. Hiring Manager will provide.
  • Prior experience working in a mail center preferred
  • Knowledge of US Postal regulations in the process of dealing with incoming, outgoing, certified, registered, insured, and express mail preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to perform routine tasks on special class mail as well as routine and repetitive tasks for long periods with minimum supervision.
  • Must be able to stand, reach, and walk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to make minor decisions regarding mail issues/questions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Good reading and writing skills.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply, and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Basic ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Office software and accountable mail tracking system. Basic typing skills.

The incumbent is assigned duties according to specified procedure and receives detailed instructions. Work is checked frequently.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
