The Civil Engineer Senior - River Mechanics oversees in-house river mechanics projects, conducts engineering software testing and development, reviews and approves highly complex river mechanics projects, and manages engineering contracts.

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in a work-related engineering discipline, such as but not limited to Civil Engineering, River Mechanics Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Sedimentation Engineering, Hydrology, or Fluid Mechanics

  • Four years of work-related engineering experience in one of the above disciplines

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration or by the technical board of another state with the ability to obtain Arizona registration within six months of employment

Job Contributions

  • Conduct advanced river mechanics engineering analyses, including sediment transport modeling (1D and 2D), hydraulic computer simulations, erosion hazard mitigation, and energy dissipation structure design

  • Review and approve the most complex river mechanics for Flood Control District's engineering contract design and planning projects, floodplain use permit applications, sand and gravel use permit applications, and right-of-way permit applications

  • Support the planning, design, and implementation of dam rehabilitation, levee construction and repair, bridge assessments, open channel projects, capital improvement initiatives, and comprehensive water management studies for the Flood Control District

  • Manage contracts and work assignments for river mechanics and engineering software development

  • Serve as a technical expert in river mechanics, advanced hydraulic modeling, and other aspects of civil engineering

  • Represent Flood Control District in various meetings with other governmental agencies and the public and respond to internal and external requests

  • Assist in complex engineering software testing and development related to hydrologic, hydraulic, and river mechanics

  • Serve as an expert witness in litigations

  • Perform field reconnaissance to obtain information related to river mechanics on various review projects as needed

  • Other job duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • This position is eligible for hybrid flexibility after a brief training period

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly or requires walking or standing to a significant degree

  • The position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions

  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration

  • HEC-HMS, HEC-1, HEC-RAS 1D, HEC-RAS 2D, HEC-RAS sediment transport, HEC-6, HEC-6T, Fluvial-12, FLO-2D, RiverFlow2D, SMS, SRH-2D, WMS, Python, and MATLAB

  • Will be provided by the Flood Control District
