Job Description Summary:
ABOUT THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY MUSEUM AND THE TEXTILE MUSEUM:
The museum combines The Textile Museum's collection of approx. 25,000 global textiles with the Albert H. Small Washingtoniana collection documenting the establishment of Washington, DC as a national capital. Exhibitions and educational programs take place at the public museum on 21st and G Streets, supported by a state-of-the-art collections care facility on GW's Ashburn Campus. The museum is committed to academic engagement by supporting classes and research, as well as by hiring of students for museum work. The museum is AAM accredited.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Senior Curator for Exhibitions, the Associate Preparator is responsible for:

  • Assisting in the production and installation of a continuing rotation of exhibitions. Maintaining the exhibition galleries for maximum visitor experience as well as the safety and security of objects on display. Performing production work in accordance with exhibition designs, plans and objectives.
  • Performing a wide range of tasks in the areas of facilities management, special events support, and museum opening & closing. Also performing safety and security and incident response tasks, as required. Providing outstanding visitor service to insure total quality for all Museum events and program activities.
  • This position may include an opportunity to serve as the instructor of record for a university course during normal business hours. The opportunity shall be mutually agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Exhibition Preparation: Assist in the design and production of museum exhibits, including installation and de-installation.

  • Facility Support: Monitor essential building functions and coordinate necessary maintenance and repairs through the university's facilities department.

  • Operational Support: Open and/or close the building, also assisting with occasional safety, security and special event activities as necessary.
  • Support and mentor part-time student employees.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Responsible, dependable and thorough individual with work schedule flexibility and the ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and members of the academic community.
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow through on assigned tasks and be observant of work needing to be done.
  • Ability to follow directions while exercising creativity and independent judgment.
  • Experience using all basic hand and power tools and have carpentry or shop experience.
  • Willingness to train and mentor student workers in museum functions and professional responsibilities.

The position is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/ GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Art or craft skills such as sculpture, wood working, ceramics, metal fabrication, framing or painting are desirable.
  • Demonstrate a familiarity with a range of lighting technologies.
  • Demonstrate good clerical skills and the ability to read blueprints and use measuring tools are desirable.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of sound and video presentation, both digital and analog preferred.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy and CAD experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience working in a museum environment with museum objects is desirable.
  • Ability to develop an understanding of museum mechanical and security systems preferred.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 75 lbs is desired.

Hiring Range $23.62 - $30.16
