American Sign Language Lecturer

Position Overview
The University of Kansas Special Education Department invites applications for part-time lecturer positions as course instructors in American Sign Language (ASL). Positions vary and are dependent upon the need, if any, each semester. Lecturers are untenured, non-tenure-track members of the faculty. The primary role is instruction. The appointment dates will vary based on the program needs. The courses for this program will be taught at the KU Campus in Lawrence, KS.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Job Description
Teach a specified number of ASL undergraduate/graduate courses per semester for the Special Education American Sign Language Program. Courses for which lecturers would be needed are ASL 1, 2, 3, and 4.
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings.
  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Be available for reasonable scheduling of student appointments.
  • Lecturers may work with Program Director to determine format and schedule for course(s).
  • Adhere to all Departmental, College and University policies.

Required Qualifications
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in resume, and (3) information provided from professional references.
  1. Master's Degree in Deaf Studies, American Sign Language, Deaf Education or a related discipline.
  2. Demonstrated experience and excellence in teaching as evidenced in application materials.
  3. One year or more of experience teaching ASL.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience with Signing Naturally curriculum.
  2. ASLTA certification.
  3. Experience using Canvas LMS.
