Organization Overview

The Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate's mission is to support the science and technology and environmental restoration missions of the Laboratory by providing a safe, environmentally sound, and reliable infrastructure, to provide high quality crafts and fabrication services to our customers as needed and to protect people, property, and national security.

The Energy & Utilities (EU) Division operates and maintains BNL's:

  • Electric Transmission & Distribution System

  • Central Steam Facility

  • Central Chilled Water Facility

  • Potable Water Treatment Facility

  • Wastewater Treatment Facility

  • Site Fire Alarm Systems

  • Building Electrical Systems

  • Site Energy Management Control System

  • Energy Procurement

  • Energy Metering Systems

These operation and maintenance activities are performed in a manner to ensure they are always safe, reliable, efficient, green and mission ready. The EU Division oversees BNL's energy management programs including sustainability, conservation and obtaining economical electric power and fuel supplies for BNL.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Energy & Utilities Division, within the Facilities and Operations Directorate, operates its own municipal-sized EPA and NYSDOH sanctioned water district including potable water wells, water treatment plant, filtration systems, elevated storage tanks, and distribution system. It also operates an extensive sanitary wastewater collection system and sewage treatment plant. This position serves as the facility superintendent for both systems and as the supervisor of BNL's water & sewage operating engineers and sewage treatment plant operators. The position reports directly to the Energy & Utilities (EU) Division Manager. The supervisor's normal hours are M-F 8:00am-4:30pm, and on occasion it may be required to work additional hours to assist with maintenance periods or emergencies. This position supervises eight (8) collective bargaining unit staff who work M-F 8:00am-4:30pm with regular weekday and weekend overtime

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (2:1) in a related discipline and at least five (5) years' combined related water systems utility and/or sewage treatment plant experience

  • Holder of a Grade IIB-GW NYSDOH license.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a NYSDOH IB-GW & D license within approximately one year of hire date

  • Knowledge of New York State Sanitary Code Part 5; Subpart 5-1, Public Water Systems and Sub Part 5.4 - Classification and Certification of Community and Non-transient Non-community Water System Operators

  • Experience with distribution system and service line repairs on all types of pipe including asbestos cement, cast iron, ductile iron, pvc, copper, etc.

  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of pumps, electrical systems, control systems, and piping systems

  • Experience with chemical treatment and filtration systems

  • Ability to read and interpret underground utility drawings, P&I drawings, architectural and mechanical drawings

  • Excellent teamwork, interpersonal and communications skills - will interact with regulators, customers, and management on a regular basis

  • Experience in supervising/leading, coordinating, and interfacing with bargaining unit personnel

  • Solid time management skills and the ability to organize, prioritize, and perform multiple projects and tasks with acute attention to details

  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)

  • Must possess a valid NYS Driver's license

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (2:1) in a related discipline, and a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience with at least five (5) years' combined related water systems utility and/or sewage treatment plant experience

  • At least three (3) years' supervisory or team lead experience

  • Possession of a NYSDOH IB-GW & D license

  • NYSDEC 1A, 2A, 3A, or 4A Wastewater Operator Certification

  • Experience with preventative maintenance management software

  • Experience with communicating and interfacing with various regulatory agencies

  • Familiarity with AWWA standards

  • Familiarity with 10 States Standards - Recommended Standards for Water Works

  • Working knowledge of sewage treatment plant and sanitary collections systems (forced and gravity)

  • Understanding of the biology associated with the operation of an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant

  • Familiar with SCADA systems and PLC controls

  • Knowledge of safety programs, such as confined space, lock-out/tag-out, etc.

  • Excavation safety and competent person certification

  • 40-hr. OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification (Hazwopper)

  • Familiar with Asbestos handling and disposal techniques

Environmental, Safety, and Health, Considerations:

  • Standing, bending, and lifting, up to 30 lbs.

  • Ability to enter confined spaces

  • Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders and work at heights greater than 5 ft.

  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment

  • Work outdoors/cold/wet environments and indoors/hot environments

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $97850 - $163300 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
