About the Job

General Statement of Responsibilities:

The Health Promotion Specialist will lead the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of campus-wide public health strategies to address student alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and sexual health with flexibility to be assigned to other emerging health campus health priorities in alignment with Boynton Health strategic plan. The Health Promotion Specialist maintains strategic partnerships to advance college health in support of Boynton Health's mission and vision, in alignment with the University's strategic plan.

Boynton Health's mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of University of Minnesota students and the campus community. Boynton Health's vision is to be the healthiest campus in the nation. The Health Promotion Specialist is part of Boynton's Health Promotion Public Health team and will report to the Director of Public Health.

This position is on-site with hybrid flexibility.

Detailed Job Responsibilities:

Public Health / Health Promotion Program and Project Management (50%):

  • Plan and implement leadership approved work plans related to assigned health topics.
  • Use public health skills in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation for assigned programs/services.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and public health team to advance Boynton Health's strategic goals forward.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate risk reduction programs and services in alignment with work plans.
  • Serve as a key source of information for faculty, staff, and students regarding assigned health topics.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally with internal and external partners. Prepare and present information.
  • Respond to media requests on assigned health topics as requested.
  • Participate in the hiring,training, and supervising of student staff as needed.
  • Promote a safe, equitable, and respectful environment in which concerns can be addressed effectively.

Public Health / Health Promotion Systems Change and Planning (50%)

  • Identify, recommend, and implement approved evidence-informed policy, systems, and environmental change strategies to address student alcohol, tobacco, other drug use and sexual health, or other emerging health topics as assigned.
  • Assess student health needs; monitor trends; and evaluate health interventions through the design, collection, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data (data-driven approach). Make recommendations on findings to Boynton Public Health leadership.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key campus and community partners and stakeholders.
  • Share best practices and resources with other peer institutions as it relates to assigned health topics.
  • Benchmark in college public health and make recommendations for implementation of best practices on campus.
  • Use a "health in all policies" approach to advance college health.
  • Maintain subject matter expertise in assigned health topics.
  • Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to create and implement communications plans as needed.

Perform public health emergency response functions as trained and assigned within Boynton Health's emergency response plan.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in public health or related field
  • At least six years of professional work experience applying assessment, planning, implementation, and/or evaluation skills in the health/public health field, or advanced degree plus at least four years of experience, or a terminal degree plus at least one year of experience.
  • Experience leading effective policy, systems, and environmental change initiatives to advance public health goals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Proven ability to coordinate and manage projects to deliver results in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving ability.
  • Demonstrated relational skills to build partnerships and engage in collaborative work to accomplish project goals
  • Proficiency with Microsoft and Google products (e.g, Google Workspace, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a culture that respects and advances diversity and inclusion
  • Demonstrated commitment to health equity

Preferred qualifications

  • Master's degree in public health
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
