Purpose of the Job

The Director of IT Network and Database Engineering is responsible for developing a strategy and ensuring operational excellence within the network and database engineering team to align with the organization's business objectives. The Director will lead teams responsible for Linux, data center infrastructure, cloud infrastructure, telephony, database administration, and networking.

This role also involves defining and implementing IT policies, procedures, and best practices to support the credit union's goals, including long-term cloud-first strategies. The position focuses on providing stability and security for the overall infrastructure environment by ensuring that infrastructure is architected and built for optimal scalability and performance, including cloud migrations. The individual in this role plans, coordinates, directs, and designs infrastructure-related activities for the organization and provides administrative direction and support for the daily operational activities of the network and database engineering teams.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Builds and manages an engineering team that is both effective and efficient at supporting, planning and growing the underlying network, telecom and database infrastructure as needed to support operations for the credit union.
  • Provides leadership in the design, deployment and management of the credit union's technology infrastructure strategy, vision, organization, and products and services in a secure, reliable, and cost-effective manner including items such as data and application servers, operating systems, cloud infrastructure, software, LAN, telephony, database and SDWAN infrastructures.
  • Leads the infrastructure teams with agile methodologies to ensure optimum performance and efficiency.
  • Participates in key technology and assigned business unit governance, planning and initiative review teams, committees and meetings.
  • Manages vendor and provider relationships and contracts to ensure high availability and functionality of the credit union's inventory of infrastructure and applications in partnership with Vendor Management, Legal, Risk, business support services and strategic sourcing while ensuring ensure adherence to budgets, pricing strategies, and organizational goals.
  • Oversees benchmarking, analyzing, reporting, and recommendations for the improvement and growth of the on-prem and cloud infrastructure and IT systems.
  • Researches and develops ways to automate, simplify, and streamline work processes, including but not limited to leveraging cloud architecture/solutions.
  • Ensures the Disaster Recovery capability for the credit union in conjunction with the network, telecom database and cloud architecture to de-risk the current strategy for the Disaster Recovery where possible.
  • Reviews critical operational, risk and project related metrics with the executive leadership on a regular basis
  • Provides infrastructure support for next generation technologies such as Robotic Process Automation, Advanced Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Partners with business unit leadership to understand roadmap requirements and influence decisions for alignment with technology strategy to future proof implementations and integrations.
  • Manages IT staffing, including recruitment, supervision, scheduling, coaching, development, mentoring, evaluation, and employee performance or conduct remediation.
  • Directs research on potential technology solutions in support of ongoing credit union efforts.
  • Manages financial aspects of the network, telecom and database engineering teams, including network, telecom, database and cloud capacity management, budgeting, and budget review.
  • Develops and implements all IT policies and procedures, including those for on-prem and cloud architecture, disaster recovery, and service provision.
  • Establishes and maintains regular written and in-person communications with the organization's executives, department heads, and end users regarding pertinent IT activities.
  • Serves as an escalation point for cross functional teams to receive feedback and to consider alternative solutions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have knowledge of technical project management and project implementation
  • Must have strong operational knowledge of network infrastructure operating systems including, but not limited to, understanding of SDWAN, VPN, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, IPSec, firewall administration, routing, and switching
  • Must have strong operational knowledge of telephony systems, including more specifically understanding of SIP/VoIP/SBC, Unified Communication solutions to include, but not limited to, enhanced call processing, automated attendants, ACD queues and skill assignments
  • Must have strong operational knowledge of administration and licensing of Oracle and Microsoft SQL technologies
  • Must have strong operational knowledge of administration and licensing of Linux servers, preferably Red Hat
  • Must have strong operational knowledge of administration and licensing of VMware vCenter/vSphere ESXi and supporting products
  • Must have strong operational knowledge of administration and licensing of VMware Horizon (VDI) and supporting products
  • Must have working technical knowledge of cloud computing protocols and standards, preferably Microsoft
  • Must have general knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws
  • Must have excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written
  • Must be adept at reading, writing, and interpreting technical documentation and procedure manuals
  • Must have ability to conduct research into software issues and products as required
  • Must have proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Must have strong managerial and administrative skills
  • Must be able to motivate employees and build effective teams
  • Must have ability to make decisions and work independently
  • Must be able to evaluate systems and procedures, implementing efficiency enhancements
  • Must have ability to understand all business processes within the credit union
  • Must be detail oriented and well organized
  • Must be able to work in a general office environment
  • Must be flexible and able to shift resources and priorities as required
  • Must be able to complete all assignments with minimal supervision
  • Should possess a strong commitment to providing excellent service to Truliant's members

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, and stooping required
  • Must be able to sit at a desk for long periods of time and use a computer
  • Must be able to moderately lift or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds

Education and Background

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or 8 years equivalent work experience required
  • Must have at least 5 years of demonstrated leadership experience in a related IT role of a medium to large enterprise organization, including management of on-premise infrastructure and outsourced/cloud services
  • 5 years' experience in a technology procurement and asset tracking role required
  • Extensive application support experience with "homegrown" and third-party implementations required
  • Proven experience in modern infrastructure planning and implementation required, including on-prem and cloud
  • Hands-on software and hardware troubleshooting experience required
  • Data management experience required
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment preferred
