Position Summary
The College of Pharmacy ( https://hsc.unm.edu/pharmacy/ ) is seeking a resourceful, dynamic, and experienced individual to join its team. Since 1945, the College of Pharmacy has been educating students as the only College of Pharmacy in the state of New Mexico. The Communications and Outreach Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing our communications, graphic design, and marketing. This role oversees the creation of promotional materials and copy, media relations, special events, and community engagement efforts. The position requires a strong ability to develop targeted messaging, coordinate public relations activities, and enhance brand awareness through effective communication strategies. This position works closely with our Dean and the UNM Health Sciences Campus' Marketing and Communications group.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provides planning, design, development, and management of communications and marketing campaigns for the College.
  2. Tracks community relations activities and performs research to determine engagement (impressions, conversions, etc.).
  3. Writes, edits, and oversees the production of promotional materials, including brochures, flyers, press releases, newsletters, and digital content.
  4. Coordinates any media or marketing inquiries to UNM's Marketing and Communications Departments
  5. Manage social media platforms for the College including weekly posts, community engagement, and audience growth.
  6. Manage marketing and communications databases, mailing lists, and media distribution lists.
  7. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of marketing, media, and communication strategies, preparing reports and recommendations for leadership, implements changes as needed.
  8. Procures all promotional materials, ensuring compliance with UNM brand standards and marketing policies and procedures.
  9. Provides executive strategic communication support, including speech writing, presentation development, and executive messaging from the College's Dean's Office.
  10. Develops, proposes, and manages marketing budgets, tracks expenditures and ensures cost-effective use of resources.
  11. Builds and maintains relationships with community partners, stakeholders, and media representatives to enhance brand visibility and community engagement; informs communication strategies and campaigns.
Required Competencies

  • Strong writing, editing, and content development skills across multiple formats.
  • Experience with event planning, media relations, and community engagement.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and budget constraints.
  • Organizing purchasing requests
  • Establishing priorities in alignment with both strategic planning and organizational goals
  • Proficiency in digital marketing tools, social media management, and data analysis.
  • Experience leading teams and managing staff or volunteers is preferred.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in higher education or a government institution
  • Experience with executive leadership messaging and communications from within a large organization
  • Experience with graphic design and brand management
  • Experience in videography
  • Experience in photography
  • Experience with purchasing and procurement of promotional materials
  • Experience with social media management
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Ability to comfortably use Office 356 including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, SharePoint, Teams, and other cloud services.
  • Ability to comfortably use Graphic Design platforms such as Adobe Creative Cloud or similar platforms.
