VETERANS SERVICES ASSISTANT HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES CITY OF WORCESTER The City of Worcester seeks qualified applicants for a Veterans Services Assistant (Principal Clerk) for the Office of Veteran Services within the Health and Human Services Department. Under the supervision of the Senior Veterans Service Specialist, the Veterans Services Assistant will support veteran programs that assist military veterans and their dependents in regard to their economic and medical needs and ensure services provided are compliant with state and federal laws. This individual will provide customer service by answering calls, monitoring the division's general email, and in person, and will perform general administrative office tasks. Veteran and bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply. ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:
- Perform general administrative and office duties, including accounts payable/receivable, and vendor updates.
- Manage office supplies, processes mail, scans and logs documents, and handles treasurer deposits, cash deposits, and other payments.
- Provide customer service in person, by phone, and via email; screen and route calls to appropriate personnel, retrieve and forward voicemail messages.
- Conduct meetings with veterans, spouses, and dependents to collect documentation needed to identify financial, medical, and administrative benefits in accordance with federal and state guidelines.
- Process applications verify benefits, and complete all required documentation as mandated by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Veterans Services.
- Monitor client ongoing needs and obligations, connecting them with alternative resources such as, but not limited to the Department of Labor and subsidiaries, Social Security Administration, and Veterans Administration.
- Conduct outreach efforts to ensure eligible recipients receive appropriate benefits.
- Participate in planning and executing veteran-related events, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies.
- Attend professional development workshops and seminars to stay updated on changes in state and federal regulations and veteran service programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and experience providing excellent customer service, must be able to address questions and concerns via telephone, email, and in-person
- Prior accounting/bookkeeping experience, and strong math skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Basic math skills
- Thoroughness and attention to detail
- Demonstrated computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Demonstrated ability to perform calendar management functions
- Ability to work in a fast-paced office environment and prioritize tasks
- Ability to work professionally and compassionately with the public and all levels of staff/management; and can interact effectively with displeased members of the public, local officials, and department personnel
- Ability to work well independently and in a group setting
- Ability to operate standard office equipment
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Customer service and/or clerical experience
- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate degree in Business/Public Administration, Human Services, or related discipline.
- Two (2) years of experience with customer service and/or clerical experience
- Two (2) years of experience with accounts payable
- Experience with the Workday Platform
