HDR is seeking a Geologist that is a well-rounded, team-oriented individual with excellent communication skills who can manage multiple activities related to environmental remediation and compliance. Individuals who have succeeded in this position are self-motivated and possess versatility, a willingness to fully engage in a variety of tasks, effective time management, and excellent technical writing skills.

The primary duties of the Geologist position include working on a wide variety of brownfield, PADEP Act 2, and superfund sites, as well as other environmental projects as they relate to remediation, industrial, power, water, resources, roadway, rail, and related projects.

The position also includes task management and staff coordination involvement to meet project requirements and deadlines.

Primary Responsibilities

- Support regional and national projects including Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments for a diversity of projects

- Support the completion of Act 2 Cleanup Plans, Remedial Investigation reports, Final Reports, Phase I and II Site Assessments, well abandonment/construction plans or other related reports

- Interpret, manage, and evaluate data

- Lead and support field assignments including but not limited to well drilling, soil, surface water, and groundwater sampling efforts in accordance with PADEP and USEPA regulations.

- Serve as a task manager for small scale environmental investigation & remediation projects including managing schedules, and quality of products

- Provide support for junior environmental scientists and geologist and assist more senior scientist on larger projects

- Be part of a professional team of environmental scientists, geologist, and environmental engineers

- Perform other related duties as needed

Preferred Qualifications



  • a minimum of 3 years of with environmental assessment projects including planning, site investigation, monitoring, report writing, overseeing drilling operations, installing groundwater monitoring wells, well development, and groundwater sampling (experience in Pennsylvania preferred). 5 years experience preferred
  • Experience working with PADEP and USEPA clients and emerging contaminants
  • Working experience of ArcGIS applications (e.g. Field Maps App)
  • HAZWOPER 40-hour certification
  • Demonstrated technical writing ability (e.g. Act 2 Cleanup Plans, Remedial Investigation reports, Final Reports, Phase I and II Site Assessments, well abandonment/construction plans)
  • Clean driving record
  • Excellent ability to think on your feet to solve problems independently and react professionally in changing situations
  • Must be mechanically inclined and able to operate and troubleshoot groundwater pumps, environmental monitoring equipment, and other relevant environmental field related duties
  • Experience managing small-scale projects including, budgets, schedules, completing scopes of work and other related activities
  • On track to obtain a Professional Geologist license in Pennsylvania
  • Self-motivated, positive, flexible, team-oriented attitude and willingness and desire to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that supports environmental, transportation, water, mining, and oil and gas projects
  • Local candidates preferred

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Earth Science, Hydrogeology or closely related field
  • Ability to assess and classify soil and rock samples to determine geologic type
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • Self-starter with excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures)
  • May require ability to travel
