This role involves troubleshooting issues, providing engineering solutions for manufacturing or quality problems, and implementing design changes to improve product performance, cost, or reliability. The Sustaining Engineer works closely with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality, and supply chain, to ensure continuous improvement and successful implementation of product changes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Product Support: Provide ongoing technical support for existing products, including resolving issues related to performance, reliability, and manufacturing processes.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Investigate and identify root causes of product failures or performance issues, and develop corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Product Changes: Lead design modifications, updates, and improvements to address quality, reliability, and cost objectives. Ensure that changes comply with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company procedures.
  • Documentation: Maintain up-to-date design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and bill of materials (BOMs). Ensure that all changes are properly documented and communicated to relevant stakeholders.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with quality, manufacturing, supply chain, and R&D teams to resolve product issues, support new product introductions, and ensure smooth transitions of changes into production.
  • Process Improvements: Identify opportunities for process improvements in manufacturing, testing, or product development to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.
  • Compliance & Standards: Ensure that all design and process changes meet applicable regulatory and safety standards (e.g., FDA, ISO, CE) and support internal and external audits as required.
  • Supplier Interaction: Collaborate with suppliers to address material or component issues, improve quality, and ensure the availability of parts for production.
  • Customer Feedback: Analyze customer feedback, warranty data, and field performance information to identify areas for product improvement.
  • Risk Management: Conduct risk assessments and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to identify potential risks and ensure robust designs.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering (or a related field).
  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in sustaining engineering, product support, or a related role in a manufacturing environment.
  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
    • Strong understanding of product design, mechanical or electrical systems, and materials.
    • Familiarity with regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, ISO).
    • Experience with root cause analysis and failure investigations.

  • Soft Skills:

    • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
    • Ability to work cross-functionally and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Certifications (optional): Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or similar certifications are a plus.

Work Environment:
This role requires working in a fast-paced engineering and manufacturing environment. Occasional travel to supplier or manufacturing sites may be required.
