Position Overview
The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) is seeking a skilled field hydrogeologist to contribute to field work and stakeholder relations on a variety of projects. Core areas that this researcher will be involved with are the KGS' Aquifer Water Quality Assessment (AWQuA) program and other water related programs. The ideal candidate will have experience and enthusiasm for field-based hydrogeological research, strong organizational abilities, and an ability to work independently and collaboratively. The position will be based out of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in Hays, KS. The position will require attendance at monthly KGS Geohydrology reporting meetings with in-person attendance at least quarterly in Lawrence, KS.

Job Description
Research Support:
  • 25% Participate with the Aquifer Water Quality Assessment Program (AWQuA) by sampling sites in western Kansas.
  • 25% - Coordinate with the FHSU water quality sampling project to ensure sampling and data protocols consistent with the AWQuA Program.
  • 20% - Assist with maintenance of High Plains Aquifer index wells and other relative KGS water programs as needed.

Public Outreach:
  • 15% - Western Kansas liaison with the Groundwater Management Districts, Regional Advisory Committees, and other stakeholder groups.
  • 10% - Coordinate and assist with outreach and education activities in western KS.
  • 5% - Other duties assigned by supervisor.

Position Requirements
  1. Repetitively lift heavy items up to 50 lbs and occasionally carry items up to 100 lbs short distances with our without reasonable accommodation.
  2. Work outdoors in all Kansas weather conditions.
  3. Availability to be away from home base for several days and occasionally for longer periods depending on project needs.
  4. Possess or will obtain a valid driver's license.
  5. This position will be based out of FHSU in Hays, KS. The position will require attendance at monthly KGS Geohydrology reporting meetings with in-person attendance at least quarterly in Lawrence, KS.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in a related field and 3 years of related experience OR a Master's degree in the are of the discipline.
  2. Three years of experience with fieldwork related to hydrogeologic research investigations, including instrumentation and equipment setup and maintenance, equipment fabrication and installation, data and sample acquisition, and/or preliminary processing of acquired data, as evidenced in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Master's Degree in natural science, engineering, or related field with an emphasis on hydrogeology and at least five years of experience in hydrogeologic field investigations.
  2. Experience in hydrogeological site characterization as evidenced in application materials.
  3. Experience in providing written activity reports as needed for project assistance as evidenced in application materials.
  4. Experience with data processing using spreadsheet programs, as evidenced in application materials.
  5. Experience interacting with stakeholder groups, public relations and outreach as shown in application materials.

Advertised Salary Range
$55,000 - $65,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience
