JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual with a combination of systems administration experience and application development capabilities to serve as a DevOps Engineer.

The DevOps Engineer will work within a team environment, exploring and implementing technology that serves the needs of the University and University Libraries. This is an opportunity to grow your skillset, be an active voice, and contribute to leading edge technology implementations at scale.

We support the University Libraries broadly to bolster the strategic initiatives of discovery, access, and preservation, as well as advancing research at Penn State. Some example services include our online catalog, open data and open access repositories, electronic theses and dissertation system, and the libraries' website.

This position will actively work on automation, integration, performance, and to operationally enhance our discovery, access, and repository services.

Working both individually and collaboratively in a team environment and utilizing time management skills will be essential as the DevOps Engineer completes this position's responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:

All Phases of Systems Development

  • Infrastructure provisioning, deployment and delivery.

  • Develop fully automated pipelines for building, testing, and deploying across environments.

  • Automate systems conguration and orchestrate services and servers.

  • Design creative solutions for performance, scale, and high availability.

  • Develop plans for software system upgrades and maintenance to ensure secure, up-to-date software systems that adhere to security best practices.

  • Assist the development team by participating in cross-functional projects.

Project Management

  • Engage in project planning and team initiatives.

  • Work with stakeholders to determine requirements and develop product specifications and development plans.

Operational Duties

  • Coordinate implementations and changes; provide training information.

  • Communicate service changes, updates, and issues for projects and operational items to management and customers

  • Contribute to knowledge base information for services.

The DevOps Engineer will receive support and training from their supervisor for professional development. This role will explore and implement emerging technologies, as well as present areas of growth and process improvements to their team.

Education and Experience: This position will be filled at the level of Advanced Professional or Senior Professional, depending on the final applicant's experience and education. The Advanced Professional level requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional education and/or experience are required for higher-level positions.

Required skills and experience include:

  • Experience with Docker and backend application development

  • Expertise in system and network architecture while actively supporting security monitoring and threat mitigation efforts

  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities

  • Enthusiasm to learn new skills and technologies

  • Excellent written and oral communication

It is preferred that applicants have experience with:

  • Kubernetes, Rancher, or similar containerization systems that complement Docker

  • Conguration management software (e.g., Chef, Puppet, Ansible).

  • Agile methodology, code reviews, test-driven development

  • Cloud platforms (e.g., Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure)

  • Relational and non-relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, Solr)

Systems administration experience is also strongly preferred.

The location of this position is flexible and can operate fully remote within the United States, fully in-person at the University Park Campus, or in a hybrid model of both in-person and remote.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$76,700.00 - $129,500.00
