Director of Planning

The HOK New York studio is looking for a Director of Planning. As a global firm specializing in design, architecture, engineering, and planning, we are thrilled to engage in groundbreaking and visionary projects every day. The Director of Planning will provide global leadership of the Planning market sector. The person in this role will be responsible for thought leadership, HOK's reputation and recognition in this market, business development, supervising and mentoring regional leadership and marketing of major pursuits. This person will be responsible for developing and managing major client relationships.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership
- Conducts research and seeks thorough understanding of client needs for planning requirements and design solution opportunities.
- Engages clients in explorations that respectfully challenge their understanding of appropriate design solutions.
- Communicates design intent in a clear and compelling way; demonstrates the incorporation of client's requirements and goals within design solution.
- Assists in the preparation and delivery of design presentations to clients and drives consultant work to achieve design goals.
- Incorporates Integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects.
- Fosters a commitment to external and internal client service.
Management
- Provide strategic vision, as well as day-to-day administration of the Planning Group.
- Responsible for development and successful execution of practice goals, business plan and profitability; aligns efforts with regional and global business unit plans and goals.
- Responsible for conceptual design excellence; initiates project design concepts and idea discussions, provides guidance to design teams during project design development.
- Assists others with project deadlines as available.
- Maintains an appropriate billable and non-billable percentage of personal and departmental time.
Business Development
- Responsible for the development and execution of the global Planning marketing strategy; as well as the overall branding and development of HOK's Planning global practice.
- Identifies new business opportunities while developing current client relationships. Listens for and seek out new projects which may exist or are being formulated.
- Participates in selected marketing and business development opportunities and presentations.
- Develops and nurtures positive client relationships.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with consultants, contractors and jurisdictional/approval agencies to increase stature in the market and community resulting in increased potential business opportunities.
- Assists marketing department in development of marketing campaigns, materials, webinars, etc. and overall proposal preparation.
- Assists in preparation of award submittals.
- Assists in the preparation of press releases and other materials publicizing Planning projects.
Staff Development
- Acts as mentor by coaching and motivating design teams and individuals; fostering an environment of mutual respect and trust among members of the group as it grows and develops.
- Prepares and delivers evaluations of Regional Market Leaders and subject matter experts; responsible for performance development, compensation decision-making and allocation processes of department.
- Supports diversity and develops continuing education opportunities (e.g. site visits, lectures, road trips) to expose design staff to influences which will stimulate design creativity and innovation.
- Participates in interviews and recruiting of professional staff.
- Encourages staff exploration and innovation to achieve design excellence and continual improvement.
- Participates in local or state professional associations, maintains active membership, and attends conferences valued by clients as appropriate. Public speaking and/or publishing may be required.
- Participates with other Directors of Planning in HOK firmwide activities.
- Takes personal responsibility for fostering a green workplace through sustainable work practices.
Required Skills
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
- Demonstrated creativity, passion and interest in design and planning.
- Demonstrated experience in Planning focused project work.
- Advanced knowledge of planning, design, construction documents, construction administration and project construction cost control for lab facilities.
- Ability to manage the Planning group with a collaborative leadership style which puts value on relationships, both internal and external.
- Ability to think strategically, implements change, enforces policy and resolve conflict.
- Thorough understanding of project work plans, schedules, staffing, and budgets.
- Proven ability to prioritize oneself and the work of others in order to meet deadlines and provide high quality service to clients.
- Proven ability to create and maintain strong working relationships with external clients and internal staff.
- Proven ability to masterfully present, effectively sell and negotiate the firm-wide services of HOK.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Thorough knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines.
- Thorough knowledge of buildingSMART, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD).
OTHER:
- Travel may be required.
- Overtime may be required.

Qualifications
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture, urban design or planning required.
- 10 years planning and design experience of various type projects, with at least 2 years within a management/leadership role.
- Published and/or award winning projects a plus.
- Registration with current license preferred of offered in your region.
- LEED credential required after 12 months of employment.
Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, education and location. The reasonably expected range for this position is $230,000. Other compensation may include a discretionary bonus.
