The Opportunity

The Meteorology Program within the Department of Applied Aviation Sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach Campus seeks candidates for the position of Postdoctoral Research Scholar.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Lead research into the associations between extreme precipitation and marine heat waves/humid heat events in the Southeast US. This will involve multiple diagnostic and numerical modeling approaches, at an appropriate skill level for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar.
  • Lead author on two peer-reviewed publications, in collaboration with the PI and Undergraduate Research Assistants. The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will also present their work at the two largest geosciences conferences in the United States (American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting and American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting).
  • Take a formative role in the mentoring of the Undergraduate Research Assistants and lead them in the formulation and production of the science communication broadcasts. The science communication broadcasts will improve our community's understanding and knowledge of compound hazards such as marine heat waves, humid heat, and extreme precipitation, and the associated threats that these hazards pose to life, property, and the regional economy.

Length of appointment and schedule/travel expectations:

This Postdoctoral Research Scholar appointment will last two years. No regular hours or days of work outside of the established normal business hours are required, however, the Postdoctoral Scholar will be expected to travel and present research at the 2026 American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas (January 2026) and the 2026 American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in San Francisco, California (December 2026)

Qualifications

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in atmospheric science, meteorology, or climate science
  • Proficiency in Python coding and visualization
  • Familiarity with large reanalysis datasets

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work experience beyond the Ph.D. study period is not required, but may be considered a plus.
  • Familiarity with extreme heat and/or extreme precipitation research preferred
