Job Summary
The Caltech Seismo Lab seeks a research scientist to carry out research on distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data analysis and participate in continued development on the inclusion of DAS data within the network monitoring systems. We seek applicants who like to work in a team and to apply their seismological research and computer programming skills to develop and implement new technologies for innovative real-time earthquake data processing for large-scale DAS arrays producing a large volume of data.
Essential Job Duties
- Will work with PI to carry out research for processing and analysis of DAS data, using local, regional and teleseismic seismic waveforms and parametric data.
- Will participate in the research and development for integrating DAS data into the current and future seismic network systems.
- Will evaluate performance of Cloud-based data storage and processing vs local architectures to optimize system performance for DAS data.
- Will provide support and help to deploy DAS instrumentations in the field.
- Will participate in writing reports, proposals, and publications and give oral reports as needed to meet project goals.
- Will work with PI supervision on assignments and projects. Responsible for completing significant project or assignment milestones.
- Performs all other duties as assigned, including varied technical assignments requiring the use of standard scientific principles, techniques, and processes.

Basic Qualifications
- PhD in geophysics science, physical science, or math
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant research experience.
- Experience in analyzing seismic waveforms, and familiarity with standard data formats and analysis tools a plus.Requires ability to run processing and analysis algorithms using tools such as Python or Matlab.Must befluent in LINUX.
- Must have experience in processing large volumes of DAS data.
- Proactive, self-starter with excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, and must be able to work with a team. Excellent attention to fine details, writing, and communication skills are important.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards in the handling of scientific data.
- Experience in analysis of regional earthquake or other geophysical data.
- Computer skills, such as familiarly with understanding, debugging, or developing in high-level programming languages(e.g., C, C++, Fortran, or Java),would be beneficial.
- Previous experience/knowledge of Cloud processing is considered a plus.

Hiring Range
$60,000 to $82,500 per year
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
