The Business Services Directorate (BSD) provides high-quality business services to support the Lab's research initiatives by participating in cross-functional teams with a focus on risk mitigation and cost management, which is a critical component to the Lab's success. Led by the Chief Financial Officer, Brookhaven's Business Services Directorate includes the Budget Office, Fiscal Services Division, Procurement & Property Management Division, Chief Financial Office, and the Business Operations Offices. The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab's fiscal matters and its approximately $800 million annual budget.

The Business Services Directorate (BSD) has an opening for a Business Specialist position within the Business Operations Office supporting the Environment, Biology, Nuclear Science and Nonproliferation (EBNN) and Discovery Technologies (DT) Directorate's Business Office. This individual will report to the Business Operations Manager for the EBNN and DT Directorate Business Office.

Candidate will support a wide variety of financial and related functions for the Business Operations Office to the EBNN and DT Directorate, including, but not limited to budget/financial reporting, financial analysis, labor forecasting, and contract administration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Providing financial management assistance to the business staff which will include:

    • Tracking overall business performance by analyzing financial data and ensuring data complies with BNL policies and procedures;

    • Team with department leaders and administrative staff in a rapidly growing area;

    • Maintain, develop, and apply capabilities to execute organization's plans;

    • Develop multi-year financial plans by working with the EBNN and DT business staff as well as the departmental group leaders;

    • Monitor, report and analyze all financial data with departmental principal investigators and work to be proactive in mitigating any negative impacts.

  • Serve as the departmental representative on all new proposals within EBNN/DT Directorate Business Office and act as the liaison between business office and the principal investigators.

  • Responsible for internal/external financial reporting and financial oversight including specialized reports for the Department staff.

  • Adherence to all BNL business rules, allowable cost monitoring, and compliance.

  • Operating in a team environment and remaining flexible with assignments.

  • Basic knowledge should include budget planning, labor forecasting, development of current year cost plans, analysis of current year cost, rate development, and preparation of financial summaries for management, periodic program reviews, and Laboratory planning exercises.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance/business, or directly related field, or equivalent experience based on 2:1 (experience: college) years

  • Four (4) years of substantive and relevant work experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including intermediate skills with Excel and databases

  • Understanding financial principles, including: budget, forecasting, reporting, and analysis

  • Clear, concise, professional communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Apply independent judgments that demonstrate the ability to prioritize and effectively deal with deadlines

  • Ability to establish routine contacts and the ability to provide detailed and complex information that will be used to make decisions of business consequence

  • Able to identify and resolve issues encountered within your own area of responsibility; act proactively to develop solutions and provide recommendations to avoid problems

  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment

  • Should be a flexible team player who will successfully interact with both the scientific and business staff and be motivated to assist the Business Operation Manager as requests arise

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERP) including the extraction and reporting of data

  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft and the ability to generate queries and reports

  • Extensive knowledge of the Laboratories Financial system, policies, and procedures

  • Financial Project Management experience

  • Familiarity with Workday and Microsoft Power BI

Compensation:

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $80,300 - $120,400 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education, and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
