Role: Assistant Controller
Salary: $90,000 yrly

Location: Newark, NJ
Onsite 5 days a week

Job Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain internal financial controls.

  • Update and manage the Finance Procedure Manual.

  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations.

  • Work with the Development Department to create budgets for new funding proposals.

  • Understand and follow grant budgeting guidelines, including submission and reporting requirements for both new and ongoing grants, ensuring alignment with funders' rules.

  • Monitor accounting processes to ensure accurate capture of grant expenditures.

  • Analyze grant spending, identify variances, and provide early warnings; make necessary adjustments.

  • Act as a liaison with the insurance broker for general insurance renewals.

  • Supervise two direct reports: Grants Manager and Accounting Analyst.

  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.

  • Participate in annual audits and assist external auditors as needed.

  • Investigate and correct inaccuracies in financial records and implement process improvements.

  • Review payroll allocations and position assignments.

  • Handle special projects and financial analysis as requested by the CFO and Director of Finance.

  • Follow and implement company policies and procedures.

  • Maintain flexibility in work schedule as business needs change.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting; Master's Degree preferred.

  • 5-7 years of experience in financial management, including financial analysis, reporting, nonprofit grant administration, budgeting, and internal controls.

Required Certifications:

  • Accounting certification (CPA, CMA, or CFM) preferred.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and relevant regulations.

  • Proficient in complex financial systems.

  • Skilled in advanced Excel functions, including pivot tables and VLOOKUP.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.

  • Valid driver's license.
