Habitat AmeriCorps
United States, North Carolina, Chapel Hill
Mar 28, 2025
Construction Crew Leader - Home Repair

For one year, you can get paid to build sustainable solutions in a community, gain valuable hands-on experience and prepare for your future. This full-time AmeriCorps service position offers a great opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of others while building your own knowledge and skillset.

AmeriCorps National members serve the community in direct service and capacity building activities.

What will you do?

The Home Repair Construction Crew Leader plays an integral part in building and repairing homes. Lead groups of skilled and unskilled volunteers and homeowner families in construction activities while maintaining a safe, efficient work environment, thus, developing and enhancing your volunteer management and construction skills.

This position will focus on the construction work involved with the home repair program of Habitat for Humanity of Orange County operations. The home repair program is designed to help preserve affordable homeownership and help local homeowners keep their homes healthy, safe and accessible.

  • Typically serve Tuesday - Saturday on the build site.
  • Types of repairs include critical repairs (e.g. roof, HVAC, and plumbing), accessibility modifications (e.g. wheelchair ramps, grab bars, and handrails), and other general repairs (e.g. porch or deck replacement, painting, and patching).
  • Lead small groups of volunteers and facilitate safe and positive experiences for everyone working on site.
  • Maintain site safety by adhering to Habitat construction safety policies, modeling best practices and guidelines, volunteer education and site monitoring.

This position will focus on home repair aspects of Habitat affiliate operations.

Where will you serve?

  • Organization name: Habitat for Humanity of Orange County
  • Nearest metropolitan area: Raleigh-Durham, NC
  • Full-time staff: 33
  • Expected number of AmeriCorps members: 6
  • Number of homes to be built: 20
  • Activities and attractions: Beaches and the Atlantic coast are 2.5 hours to the east, and the Blue Ridge mountains are 3 hours to the west! Chapel Hill is a thriving college town with a plethora of amenities. In addition, Raleigh and Durham, NC are within a 20-30 minute drive from our office. Both areas offer an even wider variety of amenities and attractions including and extensive collection of historic sites, museums and parks. There is always something to do in the area!
  • Unique projects: We are working on building a Home Preservation program that looks beyond simple reactive repairs. Instead, we want our program to take a more holistic and proactive approach that will truly preserve the long-term viability of a home. We've discovered that more and more Orange County residents, especially seniors who are aging-in-place, are finding themselves in situations where outwardly simple repairs are just a small symptom of a much larger problem. Instead of just fixing the most pressing issue, we are working to do total home repairs that will help make sure that families are not getting displaced within our service area.
The experience our Construction Crew Leader (Repairs) will gather during their service term will be memorable and indispensable. In addition to helping us repair homes for local families that may not otherwise be able to stay in their home, AmeriCorps Crew Leader (Repairs) would get to be an innovative Home Preservation program that would allow them to get a more holistic understanding of homes, how their systems are connected and how to repair a home from a truly holistic perspective. In the process, Construction Crew Leaders (Repairs) would develop and enhance their construction and general problem-solving skills.
