Job Summary:
Reporting to the Wheelhouse Studios Director, the Ceramics Studio Technician oversees the daily operations of Studio Y - the bustling ceramics hub at Wheelhouse Studios.
Wheelhouse Studios is an open art studio in Madison, located in the lower level of Memorial Union. With three versatile workspaces, flexible studio designs, drop-in art opportunities, and classes for enthusiasts and first-time artists alike, it is easy to engage in the arts at Wheelhouse.
The Ceramics Studio Technician's job is to keep the studios running smoothly in an efficient and organized manner, while adhering to the highest safety and quality standards. The ideal candidate is an organized self-starter who values community and enjoys working with a diverse public of makers from beginner to more experienced. The Ceramics Studio Technician should be a big thinker who is able to assess and prioritize tasks to ensure a seamless studio experience for Wheelhouse Studios patrons. Responsibilities:
Provides technical support to arts program and production as well as costume design. Assists in the construction, maintenance, operation, and striking of technical elements.
- 70% Cleans, inspects, maintains, and repairs arts equipment including, but not limited to, instruments, studio equipment, lighting, audio visual, theater equipment, and/or production spaces
- 10% Assists with the use of equipment, systems, and on-site coordination as required
- 5% Advise Director on both physical and health safety standards within the ceramics studio.
- 5% Support Wheelhouse Ceramics course by managing supply inventory.
- 5% Assist with assigning work tasks to ceramic assistant student employees.
- 5% Ensure quality daily operations of the open studio facilities including kiln firings, glazes and art works flow through the studio.

Education:
Preferred Bachelor's Degree, preferably in fine arts or art education. Applicants who have completed more than four college-level classes in the ceramics medium and who have some experience in ceramics studio operations will also be considered for the position.
Qualifications:
Required: -Minimum of one year experience in the many aspects of the ceramic art medium including but not limited to mixing and creation of glazes, wheel thrown and hand-built forms, and a variety of finishing techniques -Minimum of one year experience in electric kiln loading, firing and programming as well as kiln shelf maintenance -Strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate well, both verbally and in writing, while demonstrating patience and kindness in all interactions with students, staff, and a diverse public
Preferred: -One year experience in community arts setting with direct responsibility in ceramics studio operations -Experience and enthusiasm for working with college students -Prior ceramics teaching experience in a community arts setting -Glass or small metals knowledge a plus
Work Schedule:
Willingness to adjust schedule to program needs (i.e. evenings and weekends) and to work additional hours as necessary

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

As desired, this position may teach ceramic non-credit courses as part of the Wheelhouse Studios course program (separate ad hoc payment).
Additional Information:
The Wisconsin Union operates from several buildings on the UW-Madison campus including Memorial Union, Union South, Fluno Center, Pyle Center, University Club, Red Gym, and the Student Activity Center. The Wisconsin Union is a financially self-supporting division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Financial support for the organization is provided by income earned by over thirty food service units and a variety of nonfood units such as games, guest rooms, space rentals and campus vending. Substantial support is also provided by student fees. The total annual organizational budget is approximately $60 million dollars.
